CENTREVILLE &045; Instead of going fishing, authorities say a career criminal is gone to jail, this time for allegedly stealing a Centreville resident’s tackle box and fishing gear.

Harris McDaniel, 42, of 78 Franklin Lane, was arrested by Centreville police Saturday morning and charged with grand larceny in connection with the recent theft, according to Centreville Police Chief Jimmy Ray Reese.

Reese said Centreville resident James Upshaw reportedly interrupted the theft and chased the suspect away from his property, causing him to drop the stolen items.

Reese said witnesses later identified McDaniel as the suspect.

In October 2002, McDaniel pleaded guilty in Wilkinson County Circuit Court to burglary of a storehouse and was sentenced to five years in prison.

That sentence was suspended, and McDaniel was placed on five years probation.

Reese said McDaniel has an extensive felony record dating back to the early 1980s.

On Tuesday, McDaniel was being held in the Amite County Jail pending a bond hearing.
