Alcorn men upend Bama State for SWAC win

LORMAN &045; Howard Myles scored 16 points and fellow reserve Alleo Frazier had 10 points and five assists as Alcorn State defeated Alabama State 69-50 on Monday night.

The win keeps the Braves in the running for a possible home date in the opening round of the SWAC tournament. The win was their third straight and sixth in their last seven games.

The Braves (11-16, 9-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference) got 35 points from their bench players.

Lamar Clark had 12 points and Xavier Alexander had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Alabama State (12-12, 9-5).

Alabama State shot just 34 percent, and 27 percent in the second half. The Hornets led 28-27 at the half.

Dion Callans led the Braves with 14 points and Brian Jackson had 11.

The game was the last regular-season home game for Alcorn State coach Davey Whitney, who has said he will retire after this season.

Whitney is in his 27th year with Alcorn State and is the winningest coach in SWAC history.

The loss was the second straight for the Hornets.

Alabama State 78, Alcorn women 69

The Lady Hornets avenged their first loss in the SWAC with a commanding win over the Lady Braves Monday night.

Alabama State got 34 points from Shameka Jackson, the league’s Preseason Player of the Year. Jackson also grabbed

10 rebounds and blocked three shots, both team highs.

The Lady Braves (10-5, 16-9) trailed 42-36 at the break but shot just 29 percent (9 of 31) in the second half. Keairra Levy led Alcorn with 15 points.

The Lady Braves struggled inside as both Tnonealyer Powers and Candace Roberts were in foul trouble. Powers fouled out with just six points, while Roberts had seven with four fouls in just 24 minutes.
