Braves drop crucial bout at Prairie View

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (AP) &045; Gregory Burks scored 27 points and Malachi Thurston added 20 as Prairie View A&M clinched the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 75-64 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday night.
It was the first regular-season title for Prairie View (16-11, 14-4) since 1962. The conference tournament begins Tuesday.
Brian Jackson led Alcorn State (12-18, 10-8) with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Myles Howard added 16 points and Jason Cable had 13.
Prairie View took a 37-25 halftime lead after hitting 52 percent from the field.
With the loss, the Braves notched the fifth spot in the Southweatern Athletic Conference standings after Texas Southern and Alabama State both posted wins Saturday.
The Braves will likely travel to Alabama State in the opening round of the conference tournament Tuesday.
Prairie View 64, Alcorn women 53
Four Lady Panthers scored in double figures, led by Tanisha Lee’s 18 points as the Lady Braves finished the regular season with three consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference losses.
Alcorn (17-11, 11-7 SWAC) reserve Danielle Tipton was the lone Lady Brave in double figures with 10 points, as Prairie View (9-15, 7-11 SWAC) turned 18 Alcorn turnovers into 15 points.
Lady Panther forward Alayniah Teverbaugh had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Prairie View led by just a bucket at the break, 29-27, but the Lady Braves shot themselves in the foot in the second half with poor shooting.
Alcorn connected on just 9 of its 32 shots in the final 20 minutes and finished the game at a 32.2 percentage from the field.
The Lady Braves will play on the road this Tuesday in the first round of the SWAC tournament but are yet to know their opponent.
