NEW YORK &045; Natchez High track standout Janice Davis won the finals of the 60-meter dash in the National Scholastic Indoor Championships Sunday in New York City.
Davis, who was nursing a sore hamstring, finished the finals 7.37 to claim the championship Sunday after running a 7.40 in the prelims Saturday.
Davis finished fourth in the 200 later in 24.16 seconds after she finished second Saturday in the prelims in 23.95 seconds.
&uot;In the 200 my leg tightened right back up,&uot; Davis said. &uot;I didn’t fare too well in the 200. I had injured my left leg, but now my right leg is hurting really bad. I’m really proud of myself. This is my third meet of the season. It’s still early.&uot;
Kendrick Gibbons, meanwhile, came out Friday in the prelims and ran the fastest time in 7.94 seconds, the only one to finish under eight seconds in the prelims.
In the finals, however, he struggled out of the block and ran an 8.01. The winner finished in 7.99 seconds.
&uot;Kendrick ran into some problems today,&uot; Natchez Track Club coach Henry &uot;Doc&uot; Woods said. &uot;He had a false start. He ran in the middle of all those horses. He is the best high school hurdler in the nation. I can say that now. But he’s just a junior, and this was his first time out. That’s what happens when you’re young.&uot;
