GLOSTER &045; Maybe it’s just a sign of transition.

For weeks the Huntington bats couldn’t put much more than doughnuts on the scoreboard, and a productive week at the plate has helped them go 2-1 in district, including Friday’s 6-3 win over Pine Hills.

Yet the Hounds (4-8, 3-1) left 10 baserunners stranded, including the sacks packed twice, after taking a 6-0 lead early on the Wildcats.

&uot;We didn’t swing the bats that well,&uot; Huntington coach Michael McAnally said. &uot;We’re kind of the same old &045; we can’t get anybody to come up with a big hit. We’ve got to do a better job of making contact, hitting the ball hard and scoring runs.&uot;

The Hounds came with some power early to take the lead on Pine Hills and starter David Brown. In the first Patrick Clayton led off with a single, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a Will Moak groundout.

They got four in the third to take control of the game. Trey Keith singled in Landon Yarborough, and Cameron Ainsworth singled in two runs before scoring from second on a passed ball for a 5-0 lead.

Huntington got another in the fourth when Moak singled in Clayton. But that inning &045; like the second inning &045; the Hounds left the bases loaded.

&uot;We were up 6-0 and thought we had a chance to close the door, but we didn’t do that,&uot; McAnally said. &uot;You’ve got to deliver that knockout punch.&uot;

The Wildcats had three runs on two hits off Huntington right-hander Bronson Rhodes, who struck out 10, hit one and walked none while going the distance and throwing just 83 pitches.

Pine Hills got a run in the seventh to make things interesting, but Rhodes got two strikeouts to end the threat.

&uot;Bronson threw a great game,&uot; McAnally said. &uot;He was around the plate all night. Bronson was great. Our pitchers have really stepped up for us, and we could have asked for a better outing from Bronson. He really kept guys off stride with his curveball.&uot;

The Hounds play at 3 p.m. today against Brookhaven in a non-district contest.

Amite SC 11, Trinity 0

NATCHEZ &045; The Rebels started to peck away early at Trinity pitching before breaking through late and ending the game in six innings.

Amite got to Walt Ketchings in four innings before putting runs on the board off relievers Andy Moon and Brandon Geter. Robert Young launched a two-run homer in the third inning, and Clay Kirkland’s solo homer highlighted a five-run sixth inning.

Young also tripled in two runs in the sixth inning, and he scored on a single by the following batter.

The Saints (1-5, 1-4) had just two hits off Amite pitchers Taylor Knapp and Young. Gregory Ketchings was left stranded at third in the third when reached base on a bunt single and third on a groundout from Walt Ketchings.

Trinity failed to put a runner on second base after that.

Knapp went five innings for the Rebels, and ace hurler Young came in for one inning.

The Saints host Franklin Academy at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
