County accepts road bids

WOODVILLE &045; At its regular meeting on Monday, the Wilkinson County Board of Supervisors accepted bids on road and bridge projects administered by the Office of State Aid.
The engineer’s estimate on one project, which calls for a pipe replacement on the Pond-Pinckneyville Road in the Fountainbleau community, was $53,635.35.
Four bids were received on that job, all in excess of the engineer’s estimate.
The board voted 4-0 &045; with Fifth District Supervisor W.G. Johnson absent &045; to accept the low bid of $79,222 submitted by Natchez-based Dozer, Inc.
Three bids were also received on a project to repair timber pilings on five bridges in the northern part of the county.
The engineer’s estimate on that project was $36,785.
All three bids were again in excess of the engineer’s estimate, and the board once more voted 4-0 to accept the low bid of $40,590.20 submitted by Pearl River Paving Company of Carriere.
The board also passed a resolution asking the Office of State Aid to terminate the county’s contract with B&W Contractors, Inc. of Amory for repairs to the Ashland, Treppendahl and Bowling Green Roads.
Work on those projects has not been performed, and the board requested that the bonding company be allowed to fulfill the contract.
In other business, the board:
4Deleted 81 parcels of property from the county’s homestead exemption rolls.
The properties are deeded to owners who have since died or left the county.
4Refunded erroneous property assessments to six landowners who purchased properties at tax sales.
The largest refund was $320.
4Appointed Woodville resident Ann Davis as the county’s extension service resource director.
Davis was recommended for the position by the Mississippi State University Extension Service.
4Discussed the need for continued maintenance and liability insurance at the vacant William Carter Plant in Centreville and the upkeep of the 50-acre Centreville Industrial Development site, but took no formal action regarding either property.
