LORMAN &045;&045; Nothing is complete yet, but Alcorn State’s Lady Braves are quickly filling the gaping holes left by three of their top four scorers last season.
ASU head coach Shirley Walker announced the signing of a second player Friday in 5-11 forward Kenisha Daniels out of East Marion. The signing comes after she inked 5-10 forward Kia Alexander out of South Leake High School.
The two may get playing time quickly after the Lady Braves lost top scorers and team leaders Danielle Tipton, Zandra Hall and Keairra Levy from the guard positions.
&uot;I know we have some people returning, but we’re going to be young again,&uot; said Walker, whose team finished 18-12 and fifth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. &uot;We’re going to have more new people than people returning. We lost a lot when we lost Levy, Hall and Tipton &045;&045; that’s 40 points right there. We’ve got to find somebody to fill those shoes.&uot;
Enter Daniels, who could end up with significant playing time this season if Walker and her staff can mold her into playing the No. 3 position. Daniels is athletic enough at 5-11 to play the position, Walker said, and smart enough to handle the conversion and adjustment since she was named East Marion’s valedictorian last month.
Daniels averaged 15.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, three assists and 2.7 steals per game last season. She also shot 48 percent from the floor and 76 percent from the free throw line while being named Class 3A All-State her sophomore and junior seasons as East Marion was state runner-up both seasons.
&uot;She can score in and outside,&uot; Walker said. &uot;She’s so athletic. With her talent, I think she can help the program move forward. I think she’ll be able to make the transition for us. It takes a little while to mold them, but I think she seems to be very confident. We’re very lucky to get a player with that academic ability and athletic ability. I know the program will be very proud of her.&uot;
Alexander averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists during her senior year at South Leake.
In addition, the Walnut Grove native shot 61 percent from the floor last year.
Alexander may give depth to a post position that’s shaping up to be solid for the Lady Braves in the future. They had one of the best one-two punches in the conference with Tnonealyer Powers and Candace Roberts underneath &045;&045; authors of almost 20 points and 15 rebounds a game.
Both will be pushed by Catronda Thornton, the 6-2 Port Gibson product who shined on defense in 24 games off the bench.
&uot;We know Powers will bring a lot of leadership,&uot; Walker said. &uot;She and Candace did a real good job. I think (Thornton) will be a big asset to us because she’s 6-2. I like her attitude on the floor. I haven’t seen that in a while in this program. She doesn’t mind fouling because she knows she has five fouls to give. If she gets five, she’ll come sit on the bench.&uot;
The point guard position Hall occupied may get inherited by transfer Alicia Garner, a transfer out of Los Angeles who sat out last year. Garner could play anywhere on the floor, Walker said, but will likely get the nod at point at the start of the season.
&uot;She’s going to be big for the program,&uot; Walker said. &uot;She’s going to have to bring these new people along with her. Alcorn has been very successful with guards. This is where our championships have come from.&uot;
