NATCHEZ &045; City police arrested a suspect in connection with six alleged car burglaries that all occurred early Saturday morning near Jeff Davis Boulevard in south Natchez.
Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said his department is now looking for evidence to connect the suspect to a recent rash of reported car burglaries.
&uot; We’ve had a few car burglaries reported prior to this in the Briarwood and South 61 area.
This is a continuing investigation,&uot; Mullins said.
The suspect, Willie Knight, 47, of 141 Tubman Circle in Natchez, is being held in the city jail pending an arraignment Monday morning on the car burglary charges.
Knight was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, providing false information to a law enforcement officer, disobeying a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
A 1992 Oldsmobile that Knight allegedly drove to the neighborhood had also been reported stolen, said Mullins.
Mullins said his officers had recently increased their patrols in south Natchez as a result of the reported break-ins.
Officers spotted their suspect at 3:25 a.m. Saturday morning.
&uot; Our patrolmen watched him walk between two houses and trigger a security light.
He ran, and our officers had to physically subdue him,&uot; Mullins said.
Mullins said the suspect was wearing cloth covering on his hands and had several items in his possession that were allegedly taken from vehicles in the area.
&uot; Our canine unit also tracked his scent back to several of the vehicles that had been burglarized,&uot; said Mullins.
Mullins said a few of the cars had been forcibly entered, but most of the vehicles had been left unlocked.
&uot;We urge everyone to lock their cars.
Even with the car that was stolen, the owner had left the keys in the car,&uot; he said.
