NATCHEZ &045; A Jefferson County man has been charged with molestation of a 15-year-old Natchez boy.
Lewis William Chamberlain, 64, 3227 Chamberlain Road, was arrested Tuesday on a probation violation on a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of firearms.
He was being held without bond at the Natchez City Jail as of Wednesday afternoon on additional charges of child molestation and sexual battery.
&uot;He had come in to report (to probation officers), and the officer questioned him about being around schools,&uot; said Ronny Brown, Department of Corrections probation supervisor for the region.
&uot;We had observed him around schools and, when we questioned him about it, he admitted he had&uot; been around schools &045; something that, as a convicted sex offender, he was forbidden to do, Brown said. However, Brown would not say which schools Chamberlain had been spotted near.
Probation officers accompanied by officers of the Highway Patrol then visited Chamberlain’s home in Jefferson County near the Adams County line.
There, officers found a non-pornographic photo that identified the 15-year-old boy and also found some firearms.
In addition, officers found child pornography at Chamberlain’s house, said Claire Papizan, communications specialist for the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Chamberlain was arrested Tuesday on a probation violation on a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of firearms.
He was then charged with child molestation and sexual battery for allegedly fondling and committing sexual battery against the 15-year-old, whom authorities would not identify because he is a juvenile.
Both incidents happened on or around Aug. 18, according to Natchez police Lt. Jody Waldrop.
The case is still under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol and Natchez police. Authorities would not speculate whether additional charges could be filed against Chamberlain.
Chamberlain was sentenced in March 1994 in Hinds County to 10 years in prison for disseminating sexually oriented material to children and 10 years for touching of a child for lustful purposes, with the sentences to be served at the same time.
He was also sentenced to serve an additional five years of probation. &uot;He only had about two weeks left&uot; to serve,&uot; Papizan said.
What penalty could Chamberlain face for allegedly violating his probation? &uot; That’s up to the judge in Hinds County,&uot; Papizan said.
The online Mississippi Sex Offender Database lists Chamberlain as living at his current address since Sept. 20, 2002, although it was unclear how long he has lived in the area.
