Turnout good, but still not good enough

The good news is, 60 percent of Adams County voters turned out to cast ballots in the Tuesday primaries.
The bad news is, we consider 60 percent a pretty good turnout.
But we live in the real world, so we’ll rejoice that so many registered voters &045; a higher number than the statewide turnout &045; showed up to pick party nominees for county-wide offices. Still, the turnout was not as high as the primary four years ago.
A four-man race in the Democratic primary for sheriff was likely one of the biggest draws for voters.
In fact, the turnout in the Democratic primary was 83 percent &045; which will have likely political pundits getting out their scorecards to predict what might happen in the November general election.
Between now and then, however, we have an intense three weeks of campaigning as candidates prepare for a runoff in several local races, including sheriff and the District 2 and 5 supervisor seats.
We would again urge candidates in the runoffs to run clean campaigns that stick to the issues.
And we urge voters to turn out again for the runoff, which will choose the final candidates for the general election.
We are casting our ballots not only for particular candidates but for our county’s future as well.
