NATCHEZ &045; After four of his teammates picked up one point each to get to 11 and 1/2 points, it was up to Gary Farmer to clinch the 2003 Beau Pr Cup for Team Carnoustie.

And at the time Farmer, who took on Team St. Andrews’ Trampus Butler in one of the 12 singles (match-play) matches Sunday at Beau

Pr Country Club, didn’t even know it.

But it was his 2 & 1 win over Trampus that won the Beau Pr Cup for Team Carnoustie, which finished with a total of 14 points and avenged last year’s lost to Team St. Andrews, which finished with 10 points.

&uot;I had a good match,&uot; Farmer said. &uot;Trampus started out struggling and I took advantage of it early.&uot;

Trampus was 3-down at the turn, but won a couple of holes on the back nine to be just 1-down going to No. 17.

&uot;I two putted for par and Trampus made bogey,&uot; Farmer said. &uot;Trampus was fun to play.&uot;

As for his win being the Cup clincher, Farmer said, &uot;I didn’t know that, but it feels good to clinch it for the team.&uot;

Another member of Team Carnoustie who was excited about the surprisingly dominant win was captain Chee Chee Barnes.

&uot;It’s always nice to be the captain of a winning team,&uot; Barnes said. &uot;I’m real proud of them. They hung tough.

We had several matches going into 16 that were 2- or 3-down. Quite a few of those matches they came back and tied it or even won.&uot;

Team St. Andrews captain Bobby Meason was gracious in his team’s loss.

&uot;We got too far behind yesterday to come back,&uot; Meason said. &uot;We just got beat in all three round. The best team won. Dr. Barnes did a fantastic job getting his team ready.&uot;

When Sunday’s singles matches were over, Team Carnoustie had 6

and 1/2 points while Team St. Andrews picked up 5 and 1/2 points.

&uot;I was the first one to congratulate the opposing captain,&uot; Barnes said.

Lloyd Trisler was 2-up over Howard Jones when they realized that the outcome had been decided going into 17. Jones conceded the match and both players shook hands.

In the first match, Barnes defeated Huntington baseball coach Mitch Ashmore 4 & 3.

&uot;Neither one of us played really wonderful,&uot; Barnes said. &uot;I made some key putts. I made a big putt on 14.&uot;

Barnes was 4-up going to 13, but Ashmore put a litte pressure on Barnes by winning that hole after a great shot that ended up near the hole.

Ashmore had about a 4-footer for par and Barnes had to make his par putt from just inside 10 feet on No. 14 &045; which he did. Ashmore then made his par putt.

Ashmore then three-putted and conceded on No. 15 after watching Barnes’ second shot roll to just 2 and 1/2 feet from the hole.

Paul Sparks of Team Carnoustie defeated Woody Allen of Team St. Andrews 3 & 2 and Phillip West of Team St. Andrews defeated Kent Hudson of Team Carnoustie 2-up.

&uot;It was a close match with a lot of good sportsmanship,&uot; Sparks said of his match with Allen. &uot;I was glad I could secure a point for my team.&uot;

Bill Lambert of Team Carnoustie defeated Chuck Fields of Team St. Andrews 2 & 1 and Richard Edgin of Team St. Andrews defeated Scoop Murray of Team Carnoustie 1-up.

&uot;It was a tough day,&uot; Fields said. &uot;The wind made it tough for everyone. We all tried to grind it out. Some did it better than others.&uot;

At one point the wind, which was out of the north, was blowing at well over 20 miles per hour.

Ward Graning of Team St. Andrews defeated Jerry Pyron of Team Carnoustie 2-up.

Team Carnoustie’s Jerry Lambuth came back after being 3-down with six holes to play to finish all-square

with Team St. Andrews’ David Harris.

&uot;I three-putted 11 and 12. Then I won 14, 15 and 16,&uot; Lambuth said. &uot;Actually it was pars. He bogeyed those three holes. I missed a couple of little short putts and he missed a couple of little short putts. I just didn’t give up. I kept playing.&uot;

Dan Bland surprisingly had no problem defeating former City and Beau Pr champion P.Z. Brewer 6 & 5.

&uot;Anytime you play P.Z. you’re playing a champion,&uot; Bland said. &uot;He’s a good player. But today wasn’t his day. I shot a couple under par. P.Z.’s a consistent player and I was lucky.&uot;

In the next-to-last match of the day, Tom Matthews defeated Rob Smith 3 & 2.
