NATCHEZ &045; In one of the closest games between the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints and the Huntington Lady Hounds in nearly two years, it was the Lady Saints who pulled this one out.
With the score tied after three quarters, Trinity outscored Huntington 12-8 in the fourth quarter to preserve a 37-33 win Tuesday night at Clyde Adams Arena in an MPSA District 7-A game.
The last time a game between these two teams was this close was the championship game of the District 5-A tournament at Chamberlain-Hunt &045; and the Lady Saints won that game as well.
Mallory Archer led Trinity with 13 points. Huntington’s Erin Hedrick led all scorers with 19 points.
The Lady Saints took a slim 12-11 lead at halftime over the Lady Hounds, but the visitors from Ferriday, La. tied the score at 25-25 going into the fourth quarter.
Port Gibson 44, Jefferson County 35
FAYETTE &045; Remember when Port Gibson’s girls team was one of the best in the state about a decade ago? Well, it could be on its way back.
And the Lady Tigers found out the hard way in the Division 7-3A opener for both teams Tuesday night. Merineka Mill led the Lady Blue Waves with 17 points and Amina Palmer had 13 points.
Port Gibson took command of this game early, jumping out to a 12-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Blue Waves then led 23-13 at the half and never looked back.
Michelle Gaines led Jefferson County with 16 points and Jacquelyn Pender had 11 points.
St. Aloysius 42, Cathedral 32
NATCHEZ &045; The Lady Flashes outscored Cathedral 16-6 in the third period, as the two rivals played a heated game otherwise.
After trailing by four at the end of one, the Lady Green Wave got back into the contest in the second period and managed to tie the score 25-all heading into the break.
&uot;We just couldn’t score in the third quarter,&uot; Cathedral interim head coach Erin Binns said. &uot;(The Lady Flashes) weren’t pressing us or anything. We just couldn’t put the points on the board.
Sarah Kerut led all scorers
with 16 points, while Mattie Smith and Claire Kenda led Cathedral with 8 each.
Ferriday 59, Newellton 38
NEWELLTON, La. &045; Sophomore Jameca Garrison poured in 23 points to lead three Lady Trojans in double figures in the second win over Newellton in the last two weeks.
Ferriday put some distance between itself and the Lady Bears in the second period out scoring Newellton 15-7 to take a 32-18 halftime lead.
Wilkinson Co. 58, Franklin Co. 55
WOODVILLE &045; In typical region 7-3A fashion this one was a heart thumper, as the Lady Wildcats needed a big halftime performance to pull out the victory.
Down four at the break, 32-28, Wilkinson County inched closer after three periods in the books by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 10-8. The Lady Wildcats got the surge they needed in the fourth.
Latasha Williams and Kim Griffin led Wilkinson with 18 apiece, while Victoria Hunt led all scorers with a game-high 22 for the Lady Bulldogs.
