NATCHEZ &045; Right about now Cathedral’s Green Wave are feeling pretty nice.
Not too nice &045; nothing complacent at this point in the season. But the Wave played well Friday in a commanding 60-40 win over Enterprise for its third win in Region 4-1A action to stay in the hunt for a high seed in the region tournament.
Cathedral will host the region tournament this year.
Up against a taller team in the Enterprise Hornets, the Green Wave (6-12, 3-3) were able to get off to a solid start and take the win. Turner Smith and Jonathan Jackson combined in the post to score 27 points up against Enterprise’s tall inside.
&uot;They had several tall kids, but it’s funny &045; they were tall but they weren’t very aggressive inside,&uot; Cathedral assistant Peter Arnold said. &uot;They weren’t very strong rebounders. Turner Smith played an outstanding game, and I thought he was really the difference in the game &045; his strong inside game. He and Jonathan really work well together. They did a good job because Enterprise is definitely bigger than we were.&uot;
The Green Wave got hot in the second quarter to take a 37-21 lead heading into halftime. The Hornets kept it tight after one, trailing 13-9, and were outscored by two points in each quarter in the second half.
Epps 83, Monterey 37
EPPS, La. &045; That’s the thing about pressure &045; it just takes a little while to get to clicking.
Monterey (6-14, 0-3) fared well in the first half against Epps, trailing 33-21 heading into halftime in the District 3-B contest. But once the second half started, the Panthers (13-10, 2-0) picked up it a bit and got rolling.
The Panthers outscored Monterey 25-10 in the third for a 58-31 heading into the fourth quarter. There they held a 25-6 advantage to close it out.
Ples Arthur led Monterey with 15 points.
Tensas Academy 57, Ben’s Ford 44
BOGALUSA, La. &045; The Chiefs (8-10, 6-1) got off to a slow start before using a solid third quarter to get up on the Eagles.
After Ben’s Ford (4-6, 2-5) held a 25-23 lead at the break, Tensas went on a 24-12 run in the third to take a 47-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Eagles held a 17-8 lead at the end of the first.
McCall 66, Vidalia 48
TALLULAH, La. &045; After a back-and-forth first half of a key District 4-2A game that ended with the Vikings (7-3, 0-1) leading by three at halftime, the momentum swung to the Dragons.
McCall (24-2, 2-0) went on to take a 26-8 advantage in the third quarter to take a 48-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
&uot;That third quarter was our downfall,&uot; Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders said. &uot;Tony (Hawkins), Louis (McNulty) and C.J. (Williams) were in foul trouble. Tony sat half the third quarter. That’s when they go the momentum and we lost it.&uot;
The Vikings rallied to cut the deficit to eight at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but they could not get any closer.
