NATCHEZ &045;&045; Who really knows why we celebrate Valentine’s Day? Some adults joke it is a holiday made up by either women or the candy industry so women can have an excuse to expect candy and/or flowers.

The average kindergartner doesn’t have a clue about why they celebrate Valentine’s Day, but they all know what the day is for.

&uot;For to care for everybody,&uot; said 6-year-old Kaelyn Armstead, a kindergartner at West Primary School.

For Vidalia Lower Elementary kindergartner Keeley McDonald, 5, the holiday is for &uot;you to bring people presents who you love.&uot; Or Valentine’s Day could just be &uot;for eating candy and having fun,&uot; like 6-year-old Vidalia Lower’s Lindsey Allen said.

At the kindergarten boys’ table at Frazier Primary, everyone denied having a girlfriend but said they gave the girls candy. &uot;I give girls cards and give them a hug,&uot; 5-year-old Emmanuel Morris said.

But at Vidalia Lower, most of LaVerle McEntyre’s kindergartners said Valentine’s Day gifts were for girlfriends and boyfriends.

John Austin Evans, 5, knew the meaning of giving on Valentine’s Day and how girlfriends like presents. He prepared a Ninja Turtle card for classmate and girlfriend Joey Davis, 5. How did he pick his special card? &uot;That was the only one left,&uot; Evans said. In addition to the card, Evans was prepared to show his love (or like) for Davis with a butterfly ring he bought her for Valentine’s Day.

How did he know girls like presents like that for Valentine’s Day at the ripe old age of 5? &uot;I just know cause my daddy told me,&uot; Evans said.

Five-year-old Carlesha Elmore walked into her kindergarten class at Frazier Primary School Friday morning and gave her teacher a rose. Elmore’s reasoning for the gift was simple.

&uot;Cause my teacher is nice,&uot; she said.

Even though Elmore said her favorite thing about Valentine’s Day was the candy, she said she was happy with the hug her teacher gave her in return. Courtney Carter, 6, said she gave cards

&uot;to make friends,&uot; and &uot;get back love.&uot;

In the preschool room at West the sentiments were the same.

&uot;It’s about giving candy to everybody,&uot; 4-year-old Jarrett Day said.

&uot;Everybody in the whole wide class,&uot; 5-year-old Jordan Hamilton added.
