The loss dropped Jackson State (9-10, 7-3) out of a first-place tie with Mississippi Valley State in the SWAC and snapped an 11-game winning streak at home.
&uot;This is a real big win, right here. I thought about this game since when they beat us (in Lorman on Jan. 10),&uot; Callans said. &uot;I think we came out and played two halves of basketball. We wanted to prove in this game we could play a full game.&uot;
With 8:52 to go JSU took a 48-46 lead on a pair frree throws from K.C. Cavette, who led the Tigers with 19 points.
Alcorn responded on the ensuing possession with a bucket from Brian Jackson next trip down floor.
That sparked a 10-2 run.
Myles Howard hit a layup in transition off a nice feed from Corey Jackson, and Trey Johnson followed that up with a pair of 3-pointers, the second made it 56-50 with 6: 02 remaining.
&uot;I think the first time we played them we turned the ball over,&uot; Braves head coach Sam West said. &uot;It happened again tonight for about five minutes in the second half, but we stayed strong. That was the difference in the game.&uot;
Alcorn ended a three-game losing streak, mainly by shooting 50 percent from the floor.
The Braves did not score a free throw in the final minute but converted 8 of 10 from the charity stripe over a three-minute stretch to ice the vicrtory.
Jackson State shot 34 percent from the floor and committed 18 turnovers. Ishmael Joyce added 17 for the Tigers.
&uot;We did not defend very well and did not rebound very well,&uot; JSU head coach Tevester Anderson said. &uot;(Alcorn) played harder than we played tonight. They had a good gameplan, and it worked for them tonight.&uot;
Alcorn took a 32-27 into the break when DeAndre Jones buried a trey with two seconds left before the half.
