Alcorn clubs drop second straight at AM

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. &045; A second straight game on the road turned into a second straight loss for the Alcorn State Braves on Monday.

The Braves dropped a 86-72 decision at Alabama A&M to a Bulldog team that shot the ball well in the confines of its own gym. The Bulldogs finished the night shooting 48 percent from the field and had four players in double figures.

Obie Trotter and Terry Horton combined to score 47 points.

The Braves got off to a slow start and trailed 48-26 at halftime after hitting just 9 of 29 shots from the field. They cranked it up in the second half and outscored A&M 46-38 thanks to a 51.6 percent shooting effort (16 of 31).

The Braves hit just 3 of 16 shots from behind the 3-point line.

Point guard Trey Johnson led the Braves with 26 points, and forward Dion Callans added 16 before fouling out after playing just 24 minutes. Callans also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

Alabama A&M 68, Alcorn women 60

The Lady Bulldogs held on at the end to take the win, causing the Lady Braves to further slide down in the standings after sitting tied for fourth coming in.

The Lady Braves were outscored 44-36 in the second half after putting A&M on the line 19 times &045; 17 of them the Lady Bulldogs converted. With defensive mainstay Tnonealyer Powers in foul trouble, the Lady Bulldogs tried to go inside with LaShowann Smith finishing the game with a 12-of-13 effort from the line.

Both teams were tied at 24 at halftime.

The Lady Braves finished the game with 24 turnovers to A&M’s 17 and had just seven steals to A&M’s 16.

LaToya Johnson led Alcorn with 25 points.

while Candace Roberts had 14. Smith led A&M with 16 points.
