BROOKHAVEN &045; Most times when an unranked team faces a team ranked No. 1 in the state, the unranked team is usually fired up and ready to pull off the upset.
That exception this season has been any team faces the MPSA’s best girls team in the state, the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars.
The fifth-seeded Centreville Lady Tigers were apparently not up to the challenge as the Lady Cougars cruised to a 73-24 win Friday night in the semifinals of the District 4-AA Tournament at Brookhaven Academy’s.
And Centreville head coach Penny Sawyer wishes her team would have played with more desire and intensity than it showed.
&uot;I wish we would’ve played with more heart,&uot; Sawyer said. &uot;We didn’t play our best and that concerns me a lot.&uot;
Brookhaven (33-0) advanced to the championship game and will face the winner of the Presbyterian Christian-Columbia Academy game
and Centreville (10-15) will play the loser of that game.
&uot;My main objective was to keep everybody fresh for (today) to drive the ball as well as we can,&uot; Sawyer said. &uot;That’s why I put everyone in there.
&uot;That’s why we didn’t play as well as we could have played.&uot;
Lake Providence 61, Ferriday 57
FERRIDAY, La. &045; Just when it seemed the Lady Trojans would pull out a huge game in terms of the District 4-2A standings, the Lady Panthers got defensive in the final two minutes to pull out the win.
Ferriday (11-9, 2-4) overcame a five-point deficit going into the fourth quarter to tie the score at 55-55 with about two minutes left in the game.
That’s when Lake Providence (21-6, 6-2) turned to its defense to take the lead for good.
&uot;We turned the ball and they scored,&uot; Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron said. &uot;We never could get back in a groove after that.&uot;
Costly indeed because the Lady Trojans had a chance to go into third place by itself in 4-2A, but instead may end up in fourth depending on the outcome of the Crowville-Vidalia game.
Wilkinson Co. 53, Hazlehurst 43
WOODVILLE &045; The Lady Wildcats are on a roll and the Lady Indians, who had dominated Region 7-3A for the last several years, are going in a direction they’re not accustomed to.
&uot;This is the first time since I’ve been here that we’ve beaten Hazlehurst,&uot; Lady Wildcats head coach Edwin White said. &uot;My team really needed that confidence going into the (region) tournament.&uot;
Not only that, the Lady Wildcats are on a three-game winning streak and play at Natchez High next Friday.
The win also got Wilkinson County (16-9, 7-5) back in the hunt for at least the fourth seed in the Region 7-3A Tournament even though they have completed region play.
Cathedral 51, Pelahatchie 40
NATCHEZ &045; The Lady Green Wave are no longer in the cellar in Region 7-1A thanks to an 11-point win over a Lady Chiefs team that has won just one game all season Friday night.
Cathedral took a 24-15 lead at halftime and increased its lead to 40-27 at the end of the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Block 78, Tallulah 55
TALLULAH, La. &045; The Lady Bears at least temporarily moved into sole possession of second possession of second place in District 4-1A with an win over the winless Lady Trojans Friday night.
Block (11-13, 4-2) scored 24 points in the first quarter, but didn’t put the game away until the second when by outscoring Tallulah (0-21, 0-7) 19-11 to take a 43-28 halftime lead.
Monterey 52, Epps 42
MONTEREY, La. &045; After struggling in the first half, the Lady Wolves turned up their offense up a few notches on their way to a stunning District 3-B upset of the Lady Panthers Friday night.
The win kept Epps (9-14, 4-2) from moving into a first-place tie with Harrisonburg while getting Monterey (13-11, 2-5) out of the cellar in district play.
Crowville 55, Vidalia 41
VIDALIA, La. &045; The Lady Bulldogs’ Keisha Jones led Crowville (15-12, 3-4) with a game-high 39 points in the victory.
Dominique Trimble led Vidalia with 15 points as the Lady Vikings remain winless.
