Johnson’s jumper lifts Alcorn over Grambling

GRAMBLING, La. &045; A jumper by guard Trey Johnson at the buzzer proved to be the deciding factor in Grambling State’s 78-77 loss to the Alcorn State Braves.

The win was the second straight road win for the Braves after they pulled out a victory at Jackson State on Saturday.

The Braves (7-13, 6-5) trailed at halftime but shot well the entire game. Five players finished in double figures for the Braves, including Brian Jackson and John Chandler with 18 apiece as high scorers.

The G-Men shot only 30 percent in the second half.

&uot;If you know about Alcorn, you know it is going to be a tough game,&uot; Grambling head coach Larry Wright said. &uot;We got down, we came back, fought and lost on a tough shot. When you lose like that, you give the opponent credit and prepare for the next ball game.&uot;

Grambling State was led by guard Brion Rush who had a game-high of 31 points including six of eight 3-pointers along with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Forward Paul Haynes had 25 points including eight of eight free throw attempts. He also had eight rebounds and two assists, one steal and one blocked shot.

Jackson connected on seven of 12 field goals while pulling down four rebounds as Chandler converted on seven of 11 field goals including four of six three-pointers.

Both DeAndre Jones and Johnson each had 12 points apiece while Jones had eight rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot.

Dion Callans added 10 for the Braves.

Both teams shot even from 3-point range with each team shooting 35.7 percent by connecting on seven of 15 attempts.

Grambling State managed to outshoot Alcorn State from the free-throw line with 66.7 percent from 35.7 percent. The Braves outscored Grambling State 49-34 in the paint.

Next up for Grambling State is a trip to Houston to face the Texas Southern Tigers Saturday, February 14th at 7:30 p.m. The Alcorn State Braves will return to the Davey L. Whitney Complex to face the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils on Saturday.
