GLOSTER &045; Gloster alderman and volunteer fireman Elliot Davis, 51, was killed Sunday afternoon when a fire truck he was driving overturned, according to Sgt. Rod Crawford of the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s Troop M.
Fellow volunteer fireman James McCurley, 47, a passenger in the truck, was transported to Field Memorial Community Hospital in Centreville and held overnight for observation, Crawford said.
An FMCH spokesperson said McCurley was listed in stable condition on Monday.
Davis and McCurley were answering a call to a brush fire when the accident occurred about seven miles southeast of Gloster in a curve on Kahnville Road, Crawford said. Crawford said troopers were notified of the accident at 3:19 p.m.
&uot;In response to a fire call or incident, Davis left the roadway to the right and over-corrected, causing the truck to cross both lanes of traffic and leave the roadway to the left,&uot; Crawford said.
Crawford said the weight of the truck’s 1,000-gallon water tank caused it to roll over when Davis made a second attempt to bring the truck back to the roadway.
Davis was partially ejected and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, Crawford said.
Neither Davis or McCurley were wearing seat belts, and alcohol was not a factor in the accident, Crawford said.
Gloster Mayor Bill Adams said Davis will be missed. &uot; It’s a big loss for all of us. He was involved in the community and very well-liked,&uot; Adams said.
Davis represented Gloster’s Ward 5 and supervised the town’s emergency vehicle operations.
