Vikings take out Crowville; Huntington sluggish in loss

VIDALIA, La. &045; The news wasn’t all that bad. Brett Hinson at least got to play Monday.
But he didn’t pitch, and after the weekend tournament and one pitcher going down with a sore arm, the Vidalia Vikings really had to piece together some pitching in a non-district contest against Crowville.
Sophomore left-hander Tony Godbolt got his first start and went two innings before freshman Shane Knapp went two more in the Vikings’ 19-10 win over Crowville in four innings.
&uot;You’ve got to remember we’re not only playing varsity games but we’re playing JV games right along with them,&uot; VHS head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. &uot;It’s straining us, and my young kids will have to step up. That’s what we had tonight. We’ve got to get through Thursday’s and Saturday’s games with three pitchers. As long as we keep swinging the bats, we’ve got a chance.&uot;
Hoffpauir said Hinson had his shoulder checked out Monday and was diagnosed with a strained rotator cuff. He played but was the Vikings’ designated hitter in the contest after he tried to throw before the game and experienced some pain.
The kicker, however, is that reliever Patrick Golden is out for the year with arm trouble he’s had for two or three years.
The pitching yielded 10 runs on nine hits Monday, but the Bulldogs were able to take advantage of five Vidalia errors. Crowville returned the favor with six errors for Vidalia to take advantage of, and the Vikings used a 10-run first to take command early.
&uot;We swung it real well,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;It was kind of a sloppy-played game, but I’ll take a sloppy win over a sloppy loss.&uot;
Jeffrey Anderson highlighted that 10-run first with a two-run double. He along with Mac Ware and Reid Simpson each drove in three runs as the Vikings tagged on three in the second and six in the third.
The game was called due to time limit.
Heidelberg 24, WCCA 5
HEIDELBERG &045; When Wilkinson Christian head coach Ray Olive scheduled this game, it wasn’t exactly the result he had in mind.
But Olive nonetheless found out how good Heidelberg is and got his team a little humbled in the process. The Rams were playing good ball before coming in having started the season 6-3, but the Rebels scored 13 runs in the first inning thanks to five WCCA errors to put the game away early before it ended in four innings.
&uot;Heidelberg is a solid baseball team all the way around,&uot; Olive said. &uot;I wanted us to go on a trip and see if we could play. We came to play right at the bat at the beginning but not in the field. It was tough. They’re a pretty class team.&uot;
The Rams got two runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead when Cody Longmire and Stephen Goulette each came across on passed balls. The Rebels got 13 in the bottom half with Ryan Aultman slamming a three-run homer.
The Rams got three in the second with Duston Dor doubling in two runs. The Rebels got a couple more home runs as Mason Key had a three-run shot in the second and Ian Sharp had a two-run blast in the third.

FERRIDAY, La. &045; Errors are still nagging the Hounds, and head coach Mitch Ashmore has probably seen enough of it.
The Hounds committed 11 errors in the loss to the Colonels. It overshadowed a decent outing on the mound by Jacob Bonnette and the four runs on five hits they had at the plate.
&uot;I’ve been at Huntington a long time, and evidently I’m not doing a very good job of coaching,&uot; Ashmore said. &uot;The last four games we have been an embarrassment to the game of baseball. That’s as flat as I can say it to you. When you commit 11 errors in one ball game, you’re not going to beat anybody. In the last four ball games we have committed error after error on routine plays.&uot;
The Hounds had a 2-1 lead after two before Copiah got two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. The Hounds answered with a run in the bottom half, but Copiah’s four in the seventh put it away.
