Moon’s efforts in relief help Saints nab comeback victory

NATCHEZ &045; Andy Moon is a finisher.
When you get down to it, the senior right-hander would rather come in with the game on the line than get the nod to start the game. Not that he’d snub his teammates at Trinity on his turn to start, but he showed Thursday night against WCCA he can be counted on when the game is on the line.
Moon came in for Walt Ketchings in crunch time in the fifth and allowed two hits, struck out six and closed the door on an 8-7 comeback win for the Saints. The win put the Saints tied for second in District 7-A with the Rams.
&uot;It seems I do better when I’m in relief,&uot; said Moon, who got the win. &uot;That’s the way it’s been going this year. Everything was working for me. (The comeback) is just staying focused and keep working at it. We’ve been struggling all year, and we’ve come back a couple of times and got some wins.&uot;
Like Moon, the Saints seem to be a bunch of finishers as well. Like most of the season so far, they had some awfully bad things happen to them at the start of Thursday’s game but never really went away.
The Rams scored four runs in the first inning thanks to a couple of Trinity errors and were on the verge of breaking it open. But the same things happened to WCCA late in the game as the Saints picked up four in the sixth to take the one-run lead.
That was all Moon needed to close the door.
&uot;Walt didn’t have his best game tonight,&uot; Trinity head coach Matt Mason said. &uot;He was out there working hard, but he didn’t have his best game. Andy battled through it, came out the next couple of innings strong and gave us a chance to win. We threw a few breaking balls, but he had good pop on his fastball. We stuck with the fastball, and we got a couple of outs with it.&uot;
Moon yielded a single to Collin Dor after taking the mound in the fifth inning, and the Rams got two runs home on the play as Taylor Fontenot and Brad Pritchard came across for a 7-4 lead. But Moon got the next batter to strike out to end the inning.
Moon struck out two in the sixth and had help from a diving Clint Easom in left on a fly ball, and in the seventh Moon got all his outs on strikeouts to end the game.
&uot;I was hitting my spots and everything, and it seemed like it was working good,&uot; Moon said. &uot;One of the best outings I’ve had. That’s my main pitch &045; the curveball. That’s the only curveball I threw &045; the last pitch.&uot;
Moon was able to take over in that seventh inning and really work after the Saints took the one-run lead with four in the sixth. The Rams committed two errors in the inning, and they led to all runs being unearned.
Stevan Ridley led off with a double and scored on an error on a ball hit by Moon, and Moon and Kyle Dunaway each scored on an error when the Saints loaded the bases and a throw from shortstop to second on an Easom grounder went into right field to tie the game at 7-7.
Matthew Freeman went to third on the play, and he scored when Gregory Ketchings grounded out back to the mound.
&uot;You can’t win when you have errors with runners on the bases,&uot; WCCA head coach Ray Olive said. &uot;That’s what we do. I know four runs were off errors, if not five. I can tell you right now I hand it to Trinity. They believed even when we jumped up they could finish the game. They stayed positive and played hard.
&uot;I commend them and the way they played because they out-played us. They out-played us in class, attitude and baseball tonight.&uot;
The Rams had the lead in that fifth when they got three runs that were charged to Walt Ketchings. But things couldn’t have been any worse for the Saints after that first inning when they had three errors to result in four unearned runs for WCCA.
Ruston Cado reached on an infield single, went to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored when the throw went into left field. Cody Longmire walked and scored on a Steven Goulette single, and Goulette scored on an error.
Duston Dor reached base on an error and scored on another error.
&uot;I don’t know what gets these kids started, but we weren’t focused to start this game,&uot; Mason said. &uot;After I fuss at them and they get down, they get focused. We’ve still got to get better. We’ve got to correct some things before we get to the district tournament.&uot;
The Saints got three in the third when Ryan Rachal homered with Easom and Gregory Ketchings on base.
The Saints added another in the fourth when Ridley reached on an infield single, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an error on a ball off the bat of Moon.
That tied the game at 4-4.
