BROOKHAVEN &045; As well as Cathedral has been hitting the ball lately, you’d think it would take Pedro Martinez to toss a no-hitter on them.
Nope. Just Brooks Hall.
Hall with his offspeed stuff and slider on the outside corner kept the Green Wave hitless in a 10-0 defeat Saturday in the first of the Green Wave’s two games at the Brookhaven tournament. The Green Wave (19-3) followed that with a 20-13 win over Franklin County in the second game.
Hall, however, is plenty familiar with the Green Wave. In 21 innings he’s pitched against Cathedral, he’s allowed just five hits. On Saturday he faced just 18 batters in the six-inning contest as Michael Blain reached on an error but was picked off.
&uot;He’s not overpowering, but he throws that slider away and keeps you off balance,&uot; CHS head coach Craig Beesley said. &uot;It was a good game through four innings. We weren’t hitting the ball, but we were down 1-0 at the time and I thought we could get a run. We struggled against him (in February), and we knew we would face him today.
&uot;The thing that worries me is he looks exactly like a pitcher from Mize. It has me worried coming into the playoffs &045; somebody coming in and throwing offspeed and that slider on the outside corner.&uot;
The Panthers couldn’t get much off Cathedral starter Te Riley in the early innings, holding that 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth. That’s when they broke it open with six runs with a two Cathedral errors mixed in to take a 7-0 lead.
The Panthers then scored three in the bottom of the sixth to end it early.
&uot;They did a good job of hitting the ball,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;They’ve got a real good ball club. They were 12-0 in district and will be hosting their playoff tournament this Friday.&uot;
The Green Wave, however, turned it up in the second game in what turned into one of its more wilder affairs this season, 20-13, over Franklin County. The Wave jumped out to a 14-1 lead in the third thanks to seven in the first, two in the second and five in the third.
But the Bulldogs put nine on the board in the fourth to cut it to 14-10. Cathedral tacked on four in the fifth for an 18-10 lead.
&uot;I was pleased to see how we bounced back in the second game,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;Our seniors had a little team meeting in between the games. We hadn’t been beaten in a while. It may be good for us going into the playoffs.&uot;
Preston Hicks and Garrett Jones each singled in two runs in the first inning. Riley doubled in two in the third, and Nick Anderson’s triple scored two runs. Hicks had a two-run double in the fifth.
Jones went 3 2/3 innings and got the win. Hicks threw 1 2/3 innings and Corey Walker finished it out.
