MONTEREY, La. &045; The only thing for certain in District 3-B is that the Harrisonburg Bulldogs have already wrapped up the district championship with no district losses and will be the top seed from that district in the playoffs.
What may have become a little clearer was the battle for second place in district play after the Monterey Wolves held on to defeat the Forest Bulldogs 5-4 Monday afternoon.
With the win, Monterey improved to 3-2 in district with one game left &045; a home game against Epps, and a win guarantees the Wolves a spot in the playoffs as the No. 2 seed.
But it wasn’t easy, as Forest scored two runs off winning pitcher Max Green in the top of the seventh before Green struck out the last two batters he faced to end the game.
Green pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out seven.
&uot;Max pitched a good game,&uot; Monterey head coach Hank Zizzi said. &uot;His fastball was working well and his curve was falling off the table. In other words, it was breaking down and away.&uot;
Ryan Kemp hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to give Monterey (8-12) a 1-0 lead. The Wolves then scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
Leyton Strebeck walked, stole second and later scored on a passed ball. Ryan Perkins walked, stole second and scored on a Chad Thomas double for a 3-0 lead.
Cathedral 17, Bogue Chitto 6
BOGUE CHITTO &045; The Division 7-1A champion Green Wave finished the regular season by finishing 10-0 in division play after another 10-run win, this time in five innings.
Cathedral (20-3) pounded out 13 hits, including home runs from Nicholas Anderson and winning pitcher Jeremy Davis, and took advantage of six Bogue Chitto errors.
&uot;Te had a good game Saturday and it carried over to today,&uot; Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. &uot;I just hope everyone else keeps hitting well through the playoffs.&uot;
Davis allowed just one hit while striking out three and walking just one batter in two innings.
Vidalia 21-20, Lake P. 0-0
VIDALIA, La. &045; It didn’t seem to matter whether the Vikings were the home team or the visitors on their home field because they still had their way with the Panthers in this District 4-2A varsity doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
In game one, which went just two and a half innings, Vidalia, the home team, scored 13 runs in the bottom of the first and eight more in the bottom of the second.
In Game 2, the Vikings (18-6, 3-0), despite being the visitors, scored eight runs in the top of the first, seven in the top of the second and five in the top of the third to send everyone home early.
Franklin 12, Amite County 2
MEADVILLE &045; This game may have been a tune-up game for the Class 3A playoffs for the Bulldogs, who are used to going to the playoffs, but the other team in this game recently made some history of its own.
For the first time in school history, the Amite County Trojans baseball team is going to the playoffs as the No. 3 seed from Division 7-3A after going a surprising 6-4 in division play, assistant coach Dan Smith, who played at Natchez High from 1995-’98, said.
Block 22, Newellton 2
NEWELLTON, La. &045; Winning pitcher Cody Johnson struck out seven and allowed just one hit. Block (15-10, 5-0), on the other hand, had 16 hits, including a three-run home run by Chase Sharp.
