LIBERTY &045; And you thought the Natchez High girls’ string of four consecutive state championships was something to be impressed about.
The ladies at Amite County did the Lady Bulldogs one better Saturday at Pearl High School by winning their fifth consecutive Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 3A title.
The Lady Trojans cruised to the victory with 95 points to second-place Cleveland’s 68.
Sophomore Kristie Mitchell was vital picking up victories in the 100-meter dash (12.35), the 200 (25.70) and helping Amite County sweep the relays.
&uot;(Mitchell) is a very strong runner. She didn’t lose a 100 or 200 race this year,&uot; said ACHS head coach and Natchez native Tyrone Perry, who was assisted by Kathy Banks. &uot;I don’t want to put the mark on their backs for next year, but I expect to win it again. These girls have been together for everything. When they step on the track they mean business.&uot;
Mitchell also picked up a second in the long jump (17-09), while running the second legs on the victorious 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays, with respective times of 49.40,1:44.46 and 4:10.31.
Mitchell teamed with Gabrielle Dillon, Shenetcha Huff and Trumesa Banks in the 4×100; with Dillon, Huff and Yolanda Thompson in the 4×200; and Huff, Thompson and Candace Anderson in the 4×400.
Dillon showed some resiliency by finishing second in the 100 (12.73) behind Mitchell, fourth in the long jump (16-08) and fourth in the triple jump (34-7), all while battling a sprained ankle.
&uot;That girl showed so much courage and strength for me and her teammates to jump,&uot; Perry said.
The Trojans meanwhile finished fourth with 50 points, thanks, in part, to their relays team that finished third or better in all three events.
Marcus Crockett, Randy Moody, Timothy Robinson and Hollis Simmons placed second (43.39) in the 400 relay, while Timothy Robinson, Moody and Simmons combined with Lee Robinson for third in the 800 (1:31.30).
In addition, Crockett, Moody, Timothy Robinson and Lee Robinson finished third in the 4×400 (3:27.99).
ACHS also picked up a third and fourth in the triple jump with Lee Robinson (44-9) bettering teammate Simmons (44-0). Johnny Robinson gave the Trojans another fourth-place finish in the high jump (6-0).
