NATCHEZ &045; On a night like this, it could have been mistaken for lightning.
David New’s three-run homer definitely got everyone’s attention with the Rebels and everyone else at the Rebel Diamond Thursday just before thunderstorms moved in and put a halt to Game 1 of the Adams Christian-Jackson Prep Class AAA championship series.
But New’s blast did tie the game at 3-3, and it stood that way until both teams retreated to their dugouts at 7:40 p.m. with the Rebels set to bat in the bottom of the sixth.
The two teams will pick up from that point at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The series will culminate at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Prep with Game 2 and the if-necessary Game 3.
&uot;Hopefully we’ll carry it over until Tuesday,&uot; Adams head coach Gill Morris said. &uot;Part of me hates the fact how we have to play complete seven, but we would have had to play this off anyway because it was tied. This will be the third time Prep has to come down here in a week. Maybe &045; just maybe &045; we can get out of this weather that we’re in.&uot;’
But give plenty of credit to New for putting the Rebels back in the game with one swing of the bat. With two outs, Prep ace right-hander Kyle Moore fell behind 2-1 in the count and got New swinging at a hard fastball.
The next pitch was in a bit, but New slapped it over the left-field fence just inside the foul pole with Timmy Foster and David Trisler on base to tie the game up.
&uot;He got his pitch,&uot; Morris said. &uot;He looked bad on the pitch before. That was a good, two-strike swing &045; short and quick. He got it all &045; just a nice shot that kind of woke us up. We hit some balls (earlier), and he had a couple of strikeouts late, but the whole game we put the ball in play.
&uot;That’s the way a championship game should be &045; both sides playing good defense, both sides throwing strikes and each team earning what they get.&uot;
New had two of the Rebels’ four hits in five innings, and the game will pick up Tuesday with Dustin Case batting and Foster and Trisler to follow. Moore struck out two in the third inning and had four until the game stopped.
Foster reached on an infield single in the fourth when he beat out a grounder to short, and Trisler followed with a single up the The Patriots got to Adams Christian starter Glenn Williams early before the left-hander settled down a bit and made good pitches. They got two in the second when Daniel Luter singled in Wallace McLaurin and Drew Maddox tagged up from third and scored on a Harrison Hood flyout to center.
McLaurin singled in Hunter Owen for a 3-0 lead in the third.
But with the game set to resume Tuesday, Morris said he’ll bring Williams back to pitch with the four days of rest.
&uot;I don’t think Glenn was real sharp early, but he started throwing his pitches a little better from the third inning on,&uot; Morris said. &uot;He ended up with some strikeouts, got in front a lot better and finished strong.&uot;
