NATCHEZ &045;&045; Next time local doctor Mallan Morgan gives directions to his house, he’s going to point out a new landmark on the way.
Mallan G. Morgan Drive, the street in front of Trinity Episcopal School, now bears the doctor’s name in honor of his service to the school over the years.
Morgan was chairman of the Trinity school board for 10 years, longer than anyone else in the history of the school.
&uot;The obvious reason for honoring him is he’s put forth a great deal of effort and work,&uot; Board Chairman Geoff Iles said. &uot;He’s been devoted to the school for many, many years and had a difficult task.
&uot;We felt it was time to honor a man who put forth so much time. What better way to do that than name a road after him.&uot;
Morgan was surprised at a recent board reception when his family and friends were present to help break the news.
&uot;They surprised me,&uot; Morgan said. &uot;I had no idea this was going on, and I was a little overwhelmed. I am totally undeserved.&uot;
Morgan said he was on the board during the oil and gas crash in Natchez, which presented tough financial times for the school.
G.C. Gibson served with Morgan.
&uot;We had a few rather tough emergencies while I was there,&uot; Gibson said. &uot;He handled them beautifully. I thought Mal Morgan did as fine a job as I’ve ever seen a chairman do. I couldn’t speak more highly of someone.&uot;
Trinity Head of School Delecia Carey said the school’s official address will be changed to reflect the new name of the road.
Morgan was on the board for a total of 21 years.
&uot;I love that school, and I really wanted to see it work,&uot; Morgan said.
