Officials throughout the Miss-Lou urge safety and supervision when handling fireworks this Fourth of July.
In Natchez, explosive and noise-making fireworks are against the law within city limits, according to Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins.
&uot;We encourage the use of fireworks outside the city limits in open areas,&uot; Mullins said.
He stressed safe operation this weekend and recommended adult supervision with children.
In Adams County, citizens are allowed to shoot fireworks in a responsible manner, according to Sheriff Ronny Brown.
&uot;People need to be aware that accidents and fatalities can happen if people don’t follow necessary precautions,&uot; Brown said.
Brown said that there will also be additional law enforcement throughout the weekend.
And he encouraged the community to watch the Isle of Capri fireworks show Saturday night instead of shooting fireworks on their own.
In Vidalia, explosive and noise making fireworks are also not allowed within city limits.
In a written statement, Concordia Sheriff Randy Maxwell said supervision was the key to safety when it came to using fireworks.
He stressed that within seconds, people could be severely injured by improper use of fireworks.
&uot;Sparklers, bottle rockets, firecrackers, these aren’t toys,&uot; Maxwell stated.
&uot;I hope most families will choose the safer alternative and go to the fireworks shows,&uot; he said.
&uot;Preventing a tragedy in the first place is absolutely the best advice I can give.&uot;
According to Ferriday Fire Chief Herman Smith, fireworks are allowed within city limits between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.
Smith advised citizens to light fireworks on the ground and not in hands.
&uot;If a firework misfires, don’t relight it,&uot; Smith said.
Smith also asked that people read safety labels on firework packaging to familiarize themselves with safety precautions and proper use.
Additional law enforcement will also be on hand throughout the weekend in Ferriday.
&uot;We just want everyone to be careful and safe and use fireworks the way they were intended,&uot; Ferriday Police Chief Robert Davis said.
If someone is injured by fireworks, local authorities throughout the Miss-Lou area urge citizens to dial 911 or go to their nearest hospital for treatment.
Annette Rabb, a nurse supervisor with Natchez Regional Medical Center, said people should have their fireworks injuries assessed by doctors. &uot;Different kinds of burns require different types of treatment,&uot; Rabb said.
