VIDALIA&045;&045;Playing like a team of destiny, Vidalia’s undefeated Dixie Youth All-Stars jumped to 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back en route to a four-inning, 15-3 decision over Winnsboro in the District 5 sub-district championship game Thursday.
Vidalia batters combined for 12 hits, including a home run by Cory Williams, while pitcher Dee Garrison held Winnsboro to only four hits.
&uot;We hit the ball hard and played good, sound defense. These kids are playing team baseball now,&uot; Vidalia coach Tam Winston said.
Vidalia advanced to the district championship in Delhi on Saturday.
&uot;We don’t know who we’ll play yet, or what time,&uot; Winston said.
Winnsboro coach Chris Sullivan praised his team for battling through the loser’s bracket to face Vidalia for a second time in the tournament.
&uot; We’re small and we’re young, but we’ve got some good players and I’m proud of them,&uot; Sullivan said.
Sullivan also extended his congratulations to Vidalia. &uot; They’re a good team. They’ll represent the district well,&uot; he said.
Jake Winston, who led off with a double for Vidalia, went 3 for 4, adding a triple in the second and a double in the third.
Garrison, Jacob Perry, Matt Souderes, Brandon Warshaw, Tucker Bruce and Devin Barnes each hit for singles to help extend Vidalia’s lead.
Winnsboro threatened to avoid the 10-run rule, loading the bases and scoring two runs with two outs in the fourth. But Garrison pitched his way through the inning, fielding a ground ball off the mound and throwing the last batter out at first himself.
&uot; This is the best bunch of kids. They play hard and their attitudes are just great,&uot; Winston said.
Ryan Neuroth, Jon Wyatt Hebert, Tyler Waller and Devin McMannis all had base hits for Winnsboro.
