KOSCIUSKO &045; Things all fell back into place for the Natchez 14-year-old All-Stars.
Just the way they like it &045;&160;solid pitching, excellent defense and enough timely hitting to end the game early.
The All-Stars got a solid effort from Dustin Carroll for four innings and played excellent defense behind him to get a 10-0 win over Pascagoula and advance at the state tournament.
The All-Stars will play at 7 p.m. today against Laurel. The game can be heard on 107.1 FM.
&uot;We had some timely hits,&uot; Natchez head coach William Barnes said.&160;&uot;The pitchers we faced threw hard, but they struggled a little bit. The umpire had a pretty tight strike zone tonight. We realized that on that first batter, and we were taking a few. Once we got a strike, then we got aggressive.&uot;
The All-Stars pecked away early before they got really aggressive in the third inning. They scored one in each of the first two innings as Matt Barnes’ squeeze play scored Braxton Fondren in the first and Ja-Mes Logan tripled and later scored in the second on a Brian Sanderson single.
But in the third they put up five runs to blow it open. Carroll doubled home Fondren and Luke Brumfield, and Jesse Morrison followed with a double to score Carroll. Logan put one in the gap that the outfielder made an error on to score Morrison, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a Sanderson sacrifice fly.
It was enough for Carroll, who allowed one hit in four innings while striking out five. Sanderson pitched the fifth and allowed one hit.
&uot;Dustin’s fastball was pretty good, but they put the bat on the ball,&uot; William Barnes said.&160;&uot;They hit the ball, and we made the plays on defense. They didn’t hit him well at all.&uot;
