VIDALIA &045;&045; Things are going to be just a little out of place at Vidalia Lower Elementary School when school starts in two weeks.
Six first-grade classrooms have been relocated from the first-grade wing of the building due to roof and air conditioner work. Interim Principal Doris Polk said the classrooms will be moved into the main building and placed in the library, computer lab and several other specialty spaces until the work is done.
Though the library and computer lab will be closed to other students, Polk said the librarian plans to take a traveling cart of books around to the students.
Roof Masters of America has been working on roofs at both Vidalia Lower and Vidalia Junior High School over the summer. The work at Vidalia Junior High should be completed in the next two weeks, district Business Manager Tom O’Neal said.
The work at Vidalia Lower now involves replacing air conditioning units that were formerly placed on the roof of the building. Once the roof is complete at the junior high the work to replace the air conditioning units will begin at the lower elementary.
&uot;The air conditioning systems have outlived their usefulness,&uot; O’Neal said. &uot;We are just beginning that project. Everything is going to be brand new.&uot;
O’Neal said he was hopeful the work would be completed within 90 to 120 days, but said it depends on the weather.
In the meantime, Polk said the school would work around the inconvenience.
&uot;The teachers have been very positive about where I’m putting them,&uot; Polk said.
The roof work at the two schools totaled around $554,000 and the newest air conditioning related project is estimated at around $125,000, O’Neal said.
