Franklin Co. opens season with hammering of LCHS

MEADVILLE &045; Revenge can be sweet at Franklin County.

As home openers go, the Franklin County Bulldogs made theirs a memorable one. The Bulldogs flexed their Class 3A muscles in an eye-opening 35-13 beating of Class 4A power Lawrence County. The Bulldogs held the Cougars to 116 total yards.

&uot;I thought we played real well for our first game out,&uot; Franklin County head coach Anthony Hart said. &uot;We played really hard. We can’t do any celebrating, though, because we’ve got a strong Terry team next week.&uot;

Franklin (1-0) opened the hot and humid contest with a 14-yard scamper by senior quarterback Jasper O’Quinn. After Dane Hodges kicked the PAT, the Bulldogs led 7-0 with 9:26 remaining in the first frame.

Nearly 12-minutes later the Dawgs added another touchdown off a five yard run from senior running back Deandrea Cameron. Hodges PAT made it 14-0.

&uot;We opened it up early and played good,&uot; Cameron said. &uot;Our offense and defense really played hard tonight.&uot;

Lawrence County, coached by Mike Davis, cut the Bulldogs lead to seven with an 18-yard run by junior Danny Powell. Travalas Peyton added the PAT, as the Cougars entered halftime down 14-7.

&uot;We played good for a half,&uot; Davis said. &uot;Franklin County just turned it up a notch in the second half.&uot;

The notch was raised in the span of 10-minutes as Bulldogs got scores from junior defensive end Demond Jenkins on a fumble recovery in the end zone and highlight film runs from O’Quinn of 46 and 13 yards. The Bulldogs entered the final frame up 35-7.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars managed a 1-yard keeper by Peyton to cut deficit to 35-13. The Bulldogs ran the remaining minutes out by substituting in their talented reserves for the final margin to stand.

&uot;Franklin County’s really impressive,&uot; Davis said. &uot;O’Quinn is a very good back, and their defense is impressive as well.&uot;

The Bulldog defense got 10 tackles and a forced fumble from junior linebacker Casey Hammack. Talented 6-6, 310-pound freshmen Bo Tillman added nine tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery. Junior D.J. Shaw had six tackles and a interception.

On offense, O’Quinn finished with 162 yards on 17 carries for three scores. Cameron added 14 carries for 98 yards.

For Lawrence County, senior Chris Jefferson led the offense with 65 yards rushing on 12 carries.
