NATCHEZ &045; The 2004 Isle of Capri Gals-N-Pals Series Grand Finale at Beau Pr Country Club ended up being perhaps one for the ages.
The two-time defending champions got knocked off their throne, the new champions shot an unbelievably low score and there was the second hole-in-one of the tournament this year.
John and Cecilia Vinson of Batesville, Ark. shot a final-round 13-under-par 59 Tuesday, the lowest score since the Gals-N-Pals started being played at Beau Pr a few years ago, to finish with a two-day score of 126 to become the new Grand Champions.
&uot;We’ve shot in the 50s before in tournaments in Arkansas, but they’re not as tough as Beau Pr,&uot; John Vinson said. &uot;Today all the putts went in.&uot;
What was amazing about their round was that they finished with 10 consecutive birdies, starting on the par-5 18th hole and going through the entire front nine.
&uot;We started on 10 and shot 4-under on the back,&uot; Cecilia Vinson said. &uot;The people we were playing with (Robert and Patti Martin) started making birdies. The golf course is in great shape. He (John Vinson) has used the same putter since 1976.&uot;
Ken and Janet Miller shot a 7-under 65 to finish a distant second with a two-day score of 133.
But perhaps what was most surprising was that Kim and Lauren McLaurin of Poplarville finished a disappointing third place in the championship flight.
The McLaurins shot a final-round 66 to finish at 135, but they were not happy with the way they played on Monday.
&uot;We missed every putt yesterday,&uot; Lauren McLaurin said. &uot;It was demoralizing. But we still can’t compete with a 59.&uot;
Dee O’Kelley of Austin, Texas had the tournament’s second hole-in-one this year and the second one in tournament history.
Her ace occurred Monday on No. 4 from 105 yards out with a 7-iron. Witnesses were Brooks O’Kelley, also from Austin, and Ed and Paula Doyle from Hot Springs Village, Ark.
&uot;I couldn’t believe it,&uot; O’Kelley said. &uot;This is the second one I’ve had. It bounced once and went in. There was a lot of screaming.&uot;
Despite shooting a 2-under 70 Tuesday, Gregory and Pat Keller of Hot Springs Village held on to take first place in the first flight at 138.
&uot;It was scramble for two days. Pat hit a lot of good shots and kept us in the hunt,&uot; Gregory Keller said. &uot;We just made a few more putts yesterday.
&uot;Beau Pr’s a beautiful course. They should be commended for the shape that the course is in. It’s a first-class operation down there.&uot;
&uot;Overall, we both struggled,&uot; Pat Keller said. &uot;Luckily, when he hit a bad shot I hit a good shot and when I hit a bad shot he hit a good shot.&uot;
Terry and Judy Hathcock of Gulfport shot a 5-under 67 Tuesday to finish second at 140.
&uot;This is our third year up here and the first time we’ve won anything,&uot; Terry Hathcock said. &uot;We played as good as we could today. A good round for us is about a 69 or 70. We were happy. It’s a fun tournament, win or lose.&uot;
Ronnie and Jeannie Gill of Bogalusa, La. finished third after shooting a final-round 69 to finish at 141.
&uot;We were shocked,&uot; Jeannie Gill said. &uot;We didn’t have a clue because there were some good golfers in the first flight. We shot well today. But it was a good shock.&uot;
