PELAHATCHIE &045; This young team can show as much poise under pressure as anyone.
Cathedral’s Lady Wave softball team fell behind in each of its first two games against Pelahatchie in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs, but each time the team stormed back.
The Lady Wave won both to claim the series, 12-6 and 11-10, and advance to the second round.
The Lady Wave will host a playoff series Tuesday for the first time in school history.
&uot;I’ve never seen them fight back like they did,&uot; CHS head coach Erin Binns said. &uot;They didn’t get nervous. They did it in the end like they wanted to do. They fought back pretty good.&uot;
The second game was the toughest, having to coming back in the sixth inning from a 7-2 deficit heading into the bottom of the third. In the sixth Pelahatchie had a 9-8 lead thanks to two runs in the fifth, but the Lady Wave responded with a rally to take a 11-9 lead.
The Lady Wave put up three runs thanks to a double from Alex Roberts that scored Brandi McGraw and Kristina Brumfield and a single from Emily Stevens that scored Roberts.
The Lady Chiefs rallied in the top half of the seventh by putting a run in and getting the tying run at second base with two outs, but a fly ball to Brumfield in right center ended the game.
Pelahatchie had a 7-2 lead after 2 1/2 before Cathedral got three in the third and fourth innings to claim an 8-7 lead. In the third, Jordan Chandler’s sacrifice fly scored Brumfield, Caitlin Huffines singled up the middle to score Roberts and Jennifer Bernard singled to score Stevens and cut the lead to 7-5.
In the fourth Chandler came up for the second straight inning with the bases loaded and reached on an error to score Brumfield. Caitlin Huffines singled in Roberts to tie it up, and Mattie Smith singled in Stevens for the lead.
&uot;We didn’t do anything with tremendous hits &045; not a lot of double, triples or homers,&uot; Binns said. &uot;We just had base hit after base hit. That’s the kind of team they are, and they finally came through. The top of the lineup really came through. Both games the majority of them had multiple hits.&uot;
In the first game, the Lady Chiefs scored four in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead, but the Lady Wave answered with six runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to claim the 12-6 win.
