NATCHEZ &045;&045; Observing a few safety tips can help make Halloween more fun for all, according to area law enforcement officials.

In Natchez and Vidalia, trick-or-treating will take place Oct. 30 &045;&045; from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m., respectively &045;&045; since Halloween falls on a Sunday. Ferriday was still finalizing plans as of Friday. Tips for making Halloween safe, said Police Chief Mike Mullins, include:

Only visiting houses the family knows.

Visiting houses before it’s dark. If not, trick-or-treaters parents should carry flashlights and wear light or reflective clothing.

Adults examining candy before children eat it.

&uot;Make sure children can see through their costumes. They’ll be crossing the street, and it’s best if they can see where they’re going,&uot; Mullins said.&uot;

But the safest place to go for trick-or-treating in the Miss-Lou will be the fifth annual Halloween Howl event, set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 on the grounds of the antebellum house Rosalie. The event includes a haunted house, a costume judging contest and booths with games and candy. Better yet, proceeds from the event go to purchase car seats that are given to area police and sheriff’s departments.

Sponsors of the event include KFNV 107.1, The Natchez Democrat and Natchez Regional Medical Center.
