Dale, Huffines win at Fall Fest tennis tour

NATCHEZ &045; The weather for Sunday’s action at the 2004 Cathedral Fall Festival Tennis Tournament at the Duncan Park Tennis Courts was supposed to be similar to that of day one &045; warm, humid, no rain.
Well, Day 2 was warm and humid, but an early morning surprise sprinkle at Duncan Park pretty much set the tone for what was to happen throughout much of the morning and early afternoon.
After a nearly half-hour delay to the start of Sunday’s play, Lisa Dale and Danny Huffines rallied to defeat Frank D’Antoni and Lisa Sandel in the Mixed 6.0 Doubles Consolation final in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 with the third-set tiebreaker score being 10-5.
&uot;Actually, Danny and I spontaneously decided (Saturday) to get in the bracket,&uot; Dale said. &uot;We had never played together before and are pleased with our win in the consolation bracket. And we really enjoyed our match with our opponents.&uot;
Another match that ended up getting in before the rain came back turned out to be a very important one in the Mixed 7.0 Doubles round-robin division as Donald Jones and Christie White defeated Karen Jones and Vincent Washington in a three-set match that lasted over two hours, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7).
All but those two matches, the finals of the Men’s 7.0 Doubles finals and one of the women’s divisions ended up being decided by a coin flip after two hours of weather delays due to the rain. An attempt to dry the courts at around noon &045; almost an hour and a half after play was stopped due to the rain &045; was just about complete when more rain moved in.
Then the rain was not only off and on, but a couple of times it was heavy, forcing the tournament to be stopped and the matches remaining to be decided by the coin flip.
Jones and White were scheduled to take on Cynthia Brumfield and Adam Brumfield to determine the winner of the Mixed 7.0 division as both teams had two wins. Instead, the outcome was decided by a flip of a coin, and the Jones-White team won the toss and that division.
Sally Jones and Peggy Mayberry had already won three matches in the Women’s 7.0 Doubles, so they ended up winning that division without the need of a coin flip.
