NATCHEZ &045; The first few minutes of the game told the story.
It would just be a matter of time before the Green Wave (3-3) put some goals on the board and beat the Bulldogs (1-5) 4-0 Friday night at D’Evereux Stadium.
Cathedral had two good chances in the first four minutes, a laser by Cory Brock that Bulldog goalkeeper Jeremy Buckles saved and an Andy Taunton shot that slid wide of the goal.
It only took four Green Wave shots before Taunton drove home a pass from Will Carter, giving Cathedral a 1-0 lead in the tenth minute. Brock nailed a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the goal to give the Green Wave a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
&uot;I thought fundamentally we did things we’ve been working on,&uot; CHS head coach Rick Freeman said. &uot;We used more of the field.&uot;
After the half, the onslaught continued. If anything, the Green Wave stepped things up, getting fewer but better shots on offense and virtually shutting down any semblance of a Natchez attack. The Bulldogs’ few opportunities came on breakaways when the ball was sent high over the Green Wave defense.
But Cathedral had little to fear. The Green Wave’s Eric Hollowell took a long cross from Blaze Gaud, touched the ball down and hit it into the net low and hard, giving Cathedral a 3-0 lead.
&uot;We were pretty good tonight, we worked together as a team well,&uot; Gaud said. &uot;We just found the slits in the defense and exploited them.&uot;
