Boards can help heal divisions in Vidalia An issue that was designed to bring the community together has somehow done just the opposite in Vidalia, but officials agreed last week to try to mend their

A proposed recreation complex in the community has drawn a lot of support &045;&045; and opposition from those who do not believe a tax increase is needed to pay for it.
Meanwhile, the Recreation District board says it has come up with another plan for recreation facilities.
For weeks, Mayor Hyram Copeland and other members of the board of aldermen have tried to work with members of the Recreation District board to compromise on their two plans. One suggestion is that the recreation board propose its own tax increase &045;&045; a smaller one than the town’s &045;&045; that would raise as much money to pay for the new facilities.
Last week, the boards finally agreed at least to meet and work on a compromise &045;&045; and the Vidalia Board of Aldermen agreed to delay a vote on the tax increase for its recreation project.
We believe new recreation facilities are a good idea for the town, but we also believe the community deserves a chance to express its own opinion on the development and how to pay for it.
We hope that the board of aldermen and recreation board members will come to an agreement that satisfies as many people as possible &045;&045; and one that still gives residents and voters a chance to say what they think at the ballot box.
And we also hope these two boards take responsibility for helping to heal the divisions in the community by uniting behind a common plan.
