Franklin County hammers Brook at Lawrence County tournament

MONTICELLO &045; Let the defense set the tone, and watch Franklin County’s Lady Bulldogs get to work.
In the first quarter and most of the first half the Lady Bulldogs (11-2) put the pressure on Brookhaven in the final day of the Lawrence County tournament, and they came away with a 61-52 win to finish the tournament with a 2-1 mark.
Victoria Hunt, Tamara Gant and Shalena Wilcher made the all-tournament team.
&uot;We came out and played real good defense the first quarter, quarter and a half,&uot; Franklin head coach Charles Moore said. &uot;We used some full-court press and got some good scoring all around. Most of them were off steals. We were changing defenses to keep them off balance, but they’ve got some big inside players.&uot;
The Lady Bulldogs led 20-8 after the first quarter and outscored the Lady Panthers 14-9 in the second to lead 34-17 at half. Brook, however, rebounded more in the second half with a 19-13 advantage in the third to trim the lead to 47-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
Victoria Hunt led Franklin with 24 points.

SICILY ISLAND, La. &045; The return from the holidays hasn’t been a good one for the Trojans, and they left after the first game Friday in the semifinals of the Sicily Island tournament after just getting by Newellton in overtime Wednesday.
This time the Bears got a shot with 2.7 seconds left for the one-point lead after the Trojans got ahead when Antonio Burns converted on a three-point play with eight seconds left. The Trojans called a timeout, had an inbounds from halfcourt but came up empty when Dominique Myles couldn’t knock down a shot from the 3-point line.
&uot;We didn’t play well,&uot; Ferriday head coach James Davis said. &uot;We didn’t play well offensively or defensively. We got good looks offensively, but we weren’t knocking them down.&uot;
Sicily Island boys 35, Vidalia 33
SICILY ISLAND, La. &045; The Vikings fought back to tie it up late in the semifinals of the Sicily Island tournament Friday, but the Tigers’ Nicholas Drumgoole had other ideas.
Drumgoole drove the length of the floor and hit a bucket at the buzzer from the free-throw line following a Ramon Harris hit a layup with six seconds left that tied it up.
The Tigers (12-11) led by six with under two minutes left, but Marvin Warner hit a key bucket to spark the Vikings back in the game.
