FAYETTE &045; In a game the Hazlehurst Indians needed to stay in the upper part of the Region 7-3A standings, Johnny Sanders came up big as he made what was the game-winning shot with 10 seconds left to give them a 58-56 win over the Jefferson County Tigers Tuesday night.
Sanders, who led Hazlehurst (8-12, 4-2) with a game-high 16 points, scored the bucket after Jefferson County’s Quinton Keys made a big three-pointer for Jefferson County (4-21, 2-9) with 15 seconds remaining that tied the score at 56-56. Keys finished with eight points.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, they were unable to get one last chance to either send the game into overtime with a two-pointer or win it with a three-pointer.
All that after the Tigers had rallied from an eight-point deficit with just 1:30 to go in the game.
It appeared none of this was going to happen, though, as Jefferson County took a 13-12 lead after one quarter of play, but had a hard time getting the shots to fall in the second quarter.
&uot;The second quarter we missed a lot of easy shots,&uot; Walton said. &uot;We missed a lot of putbacks and lay-ups and they were able to capitalize. We missed some outside shots.&uot;
Hazlehurst outscored Jefferson County 13-6 in that quarter to take a 25-19 halftime lead. But the Tigers refused to go away in the second half.
Adams Christian 50, WCCA 38
WOODVILLE &045; The Rams surprisingly stayed toe to toe with the Rebels in the first half, but the Rebels pulled away by outscoring the Rams 13-2 in the third quarter on their way to the 12-point win.
ACCS (12-10) and WCCA (12-12) were tied at 8-8 at the end of the first quarter and neither team gave an inch in the second quarter. Both teams scored 17 points in that quarter and the game was tied at 25-all at halftime before the Rebels turned up the defensive pressure in the third.
Timmy Foster led the Rebels with 16 points. Lavalle Johnson and Greg Garner led the Rams with 11 points each.
Cathedral 49, Bogue Chitto 42
BOGUE CHITTO &045; Bogue Chitto did what they normally do with its slow, patient offensive attack. All Cathedral had to do was find a way to answer each time and play solid defense.
And as usual things came down to the wire, but the Green Wave (4-4, 8-11) put up 21 points in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win over the Bobcats (1-6, 1-16).
&uot;It was a typical game,&uot; Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said. &uot;They run that slow offense where they sort of stall the ball. We were confident. We’ve been in seven games like this. We got a lead on them and made them foul us.&uot;
The Green Wave initially pulled away in the third quarter after the score was knotted at 16 at half. Cathedral outscored Bogue Chitto 12-7 in the third to lead 28-23 heading into the fourth quarter.
Matt Goss led Cathedral with 14 points.
Franklin 43, Wilkinson 41
WOODVILLE &045; Nothing is ever certain in Region 7-3A, and a tough Franklin County squad had to work for it Tuesday.
The score was tied at 41 heading into the final seconds of the game when Wilkinson fouled Franklin big man Marcus Tillman with three seconds left. Tillman nailed them both to close it out.
Tillman led Franklin with 21 points. Gemall Andrews led Wilkinson with 11.
McCall 64, Ferriday 57
TALLULAH, La. &045; Ferriday outscored McCall 20-12 in the second quarter to take a 37-34 lead into halftime. But the Dragons (3-0, 17-4) responded by going on an 18-6 run in the third to reclaim the lead at 52-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
Huntington 59, Tensas 55
FERRIDAY, La. &045; Huntington (2-4, 6-12) took off from a 27-all score at halftime by outscoring the Chiefs 14-11 in the third quarter and 18-14 in the fourth. Tensas Academy (5-2, 9-9) led 16-13 at the end of the first.
