Natchez boys fall in OT; Saints win

NATCHEZ &045; Against one of the best teams in the state, the Natchez Bulldogs didn’t crumble after falling behind in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs were down by as many as 11 points early in the fourth quarter at 49-38, but an eight-point flurry by Micheal Chatman, with two 3-pointers and a fast-break layup over the course of 51 seconds, put Natchez right back into the game before falling to Murrah, 72-63 in overtime.

The Bulldogs took the lead with 2:26 left to go on a 3-pointer by Keyshun Tinsley, who then scored again on a layup to tie the game at 58-58. Neither team scored in the final 1:14.

In the overtime period, it was all Murrah, with the Mustangs outscoring Natchez 14-5.

&uot;I think teams get pumped up to play us,&uot; Murrah head coach Bob Frith said. &uot;But it’s tough to keep that enthusiasm up for a full game.&uot;

Natchez (15-10) led for the entire first half and for the first two minutes of the third quarter before Murrah (23-5) took its first lead of the game on a slam dunk by Jeremy Caldwell with 5:10 left in the period.

Michael Chatman led Natchez with 18 points and Keyshun Tinsley and Jeremy Houston both had 15. Murrah’s Jeremy Wise led all scorers with 30 points.

Trinity 77, Silliman 60

FRANKLINTON, La. &045; The second quarter proved to be the difference as the Saints outscored the Wildcats 23-13 en route to a 17-point win in the first round of the District 4-AA Tournament.

Stevan Ridley led Trinity (15-11) with a game-high 31 points.

Huntington 61, Briarfield 51

FERRIDAY, La. &045; The Hounds started off sluggishly, but got things going in the second and third quarters on their way to a 10-point win.

Huntington (8-12, 4-4) trailed Briarfield (4-15, 2-5) 12-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Hounds then took control of the game by outscoring the Rebels 18-4 in the third.

Mike Ferguson led Huntington with 18 points.

Davidson 55, Ferriday 51

ST. JOSEPH, La. &045; Rhe Warriors erased a nine-point deficit at the end of the third quarter by outscoring the Trojans 24-11 in the fourth quarter.

Mark Winston led Davidson (13-4) with 22 points. Dominique Myles led Ferriday (19-9) with 17 points.

Tallulah High 55, Block 50

JONESVILLE, La. &045; Just when it looked like the Bears were on their way to finally getting their first District 4-1A win of the season, the Trojans put a stop to that by turning a five-point halftime deficit into a five-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

MSD 73, Cathedral 59

NATCHEZ &045; Mississippi School for the Deaf (17-4, 8-1) took a 20-10 lead over Cathedral (8-13, 4-5) after one quarter and took a 37-20 lead at halftime.

Matthew Hall led the Green Wave with 19.

Tensas 63, Tallulah 41

ST. JOSEPH, La. &045; Tensas (10-10, 6-3) led Tallulah (3-16, 0-9) 22-13 after one quarter of play and never looked back. Tyler White led Tensas with 17 points and Matt Vinson had 14 points.

South Pike 46, Wilkinson 42

WOODVILLE &045; The Wildcats trailed by only four points at halftime, but couldn’t get a big rally going in the second half. Cory Anthony led Wilkinson County (12-14) with 14 points and Corey Dunbar had 10 points.

Harrisonburg 71, Monterey 36

MONTEREY, La. &045; The Bulldogs turned a close game into a rout by outscoring the Wolves 29-7 in the second quarter and rolled to a 35-point win.

Elijah Boothe led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points for Harrisonburg (19-13, 3-3). Matt Shivley led Monterey (2-23, 0-6) with nine points.
