SUMMIT &045; Wilkinson County capped off their best regular season in nearly two decades with a 67-25 win over the North Pike Lady Jaguars to finish atop the 7-3A standings at 10-2 and will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s division tournament at Jefferson County.
Wilkinson County (20-6) was led by the two seniors that White has coached since they were in eighth grade, Latasha Williams and Nakia Stewart. Each finished with 22 points.
&uot;The two seniors played well,&uot; White said. &uot;The team played very disciplined. Defense was intense. We cut down on turnovers and forced turnovers with the press.&uot;
The Lady Wildcats weren’t able to put away the Lady Jaguars (3-9, 12-12) until the second quarter, where they used a 19-6 advantage to take a 30-12 halftime lead. They then had an outstanding fourth on both ends of the court as they outscored the Lady Jaguars 23-4.
&uot;In my 10 years of coaching, this is the best team I’ve ever coached,&uot; White said. &uot;It’s good for the school to have the first district title in 19 years and the first 20-win season in 19 or 20 years also.
&uot;I’m very pleased for the girls. They’re happy. They’re excited. No one believed us. No one can take it away from us. They earned it. They deserve it.&uot;
