VIDALIA &045; William Clay Nations of Ferriday pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of second-degree murder in the June death of Kevin Wall.
Nations entered the plea in Concordia Parish’s Seventh Judicial District Court with attorney Jackie Owens.
Nations, 25, was charged with one count of second-degree murder following an incident just outside of Ferriday on June 13.
Wall, 36, of Ferriday was pronounced dead at Riverland Medical Center shortly after a fistfight escalated to shooting on Temple Road, two miles west of the town’s limits. Several other victims sustained various injuries and were struck by bullets in the legs, hips, thighs, waist, chest and back, Concordia Parish Sheriff’s officers said at the time. Others injured included Randy Woods, 26, Jeff Woods, 36, Chase Evans, 20, and Robert Smith, 25.
According to witnesses and victims, the spot was pre-selected as the location for the fight. Wall was the only victim still at the scene with authorities arrived.
Just after the incident Sheriff Randy Maxwell released a statement saying investigators suspected alcohol played a part in the fight.
A trial of motions was set Wednesday for March 30.
Under Louisiana law, second-degree murder is classified as the killing of human being when the offender has a specific intent to kill or cause harm, when rape, arson, kidnapping, burglary, escape, cruelty to juveniles or robbery is involved even without intent to kill or when drugs cause death.
If convicted of second-degree murder, Nations faces life imprisonment at hard labor without the option of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
