NATCHEZ &045; Riverfield left its bats on the bus, but Adams Christian most certainly didn’t.

The Rebels (2-1) got a 10-0 win in their home opener, starting the District 3-AA schedule off the right way.

&uot;One of our goals was to win every district game, and another one was to start a winning streak at home,&uot; AC head coach Gill Morris said. &uot;We accomplished both of those tonight.&uot;

Riverfield (2-2) struggled mightily at the plate, getting just three total hits.

&uot;We left our bats on the bus,&uot; Riverfield coach Britton Leggitt said. &uot;It beats me, sometimes baseball’s a funny game. This is a young ball team, and they just didn’t show up to play today.&uot;

AC pitcher Timmy Foster had a solid performance even though he said he was still recovering from the flu, which kept him out of school and practice last week. A strong effort from the Rebel defense behind also helped.

&uot;I was all right today. I’m still not 100 percent,&uot; Foster said.

Despite any lingering effects, Foster three five innings of shutout ball, giving up just three hits, striking out four and allowing only one baserunner, Corey Hawthorn, past first. Hawthorn stole second in the first inning to give the Raiders their best scoring chance of the entire game.

&uot;It wasn’t (Foster’s) greatest outing, but he did what he had to do,&uot; Morris said.

The Rebels had none of Riverfield’s problems at the plate. Foster got things going on the offensive end as well, knocking home Ray Simpson and David Trisler with a first-inning double to put the Rebels up 2-0.

David Alton New hit a hard line drive to right-center that sailed just over the fence, giving his team a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

&uot;It’s nice to do that in the home opener. I didn’t think it had enough air on it,&uot; New said. &uot;This is still the first of the season. We did what we needed to do today.&uot;

Jamie Morris capped off a five-run first for the Rebels when he scored on an error after taking second on a wild pitch and third on a fielder’s choice.

&uot;I thought we came out a little tight. We didn’t look fluid,&uot; Gill Morris said. &uot;But then David (Alton New) got that home run and it seemed to relax us some.&uot;

Morris scored again in the third after stealing a base and coming home along with Dustin Case on Simpson’s single that was followed by a Riverfield error and eventually got all three players to home, giving the Rebels an 8-0 lead.

Clay Floyd’s two-run single in the fourth scored New and Jamie Morris, put his team up 10-0, and AC took care of business in the top of the fifth to end the game.

The big bats for AC had a big day. Cleanup hitter Foster was 2-for-3 with a run and two runs batted in and No. 5 hitter New had two runs and two runs batted in. Morris, the team’s No. 6 hitter, was 2-3 and scored three runs.

Despite the big win, Gill Morris said he saw room for improvement in his team’s performance.

&uot;I don’t guess a coach is ever totally pleased with how his team played,&uot; Morris said. &uot;I’m a little disappointed at the number of strikes that we took, but we just need to see more pitching.&uot;

The Rebels had four strikeouts in the game, three of them looking. Riverfield pitcher Bradley Allen had a sharp curve ball that seemed to give some Rebels trouble.

&uot;He had a nice, quick breaking curveball,&uot; Morris said. &uot;Thank goodness he didn’t throw it more.&uot;
