Braves hope to recapture magic against Jaguars today

LORMAN &045; There’s no use in scoreboard watching today or Monday for Alcorn’s Braves.

You can figure out all the scenarios you want, but all of them have one common ingredient if the Braves are going to make the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament. They have to win, and they have to do so today at Southern and next week in Texas.

The Braves head to Southern today for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff after a huge win over Alabama State Monday thanks to cutting down their turnovers. They’ve yet to put together a win streak in conference.

&uot;It seems like it got everybody going pretty good,&uot; Alcorn head coach Samuel West said of Monday’s win. &uot;Hopefully we can start it now. I thought (our lower turnovers) helped out a lot. It made all the difference in the world.&uot;

The Braves had just 16 turnovers against the Hornets, their lowest in four games and lowest since having just nine in a loss to Grambling State Feb. 7. The Braves have kept with their point guard rotation but have gone more with sophomore Alleo Frazier, who started the last three games at point after Corey Jackson got a number of starts earlier in the season.

Turnovers may have been a problem the last time Alcorn played Southern, but the Braves had a huge night scoring as four players were in double figures in a 69-67 win over the Jaguars at the Whitney Complex.

Delvin Thompson, DeAndre Jones, Juan Wyatt and Almaad Jackson each ended up in double figures as the Braves got perhaps their most production in the paint this season against a team that may be one of the bigger inside players in the conference.

&uot;For 35 minutes, it was (our best game),&uot; West said. &uot;But the last five minutes we kind of fell apart. We had four players in double figures, and that was big for us.We’re trying (to go back). Our game plan is in place. It’s a matter of making adjustments to what Southern is going to do defensively.&uot;

The Braves (5-10) sit in eighth right now with Arkansas-Pine Bluff but hold the tie-breaker over the Golden Lions if the season ended today.

UAPB visits Jackson State today and Grambling Monday, while both Texas teams are in Alabama this week.

Texas Southern (5-9, 7-15) goes to Alabama A&M today, while Prairie View (4-10, 4-19) plays at Alabama State. Alcorn will play Thursday at Prairie View Thursday and at Texas Southern March 5 to end the regular season.
