NATCHEZ &045; One of the suspects in a January gas station robbery held two deputies hostage for 14 minutes in one of the Adams County Jail’s first-floor cells late Sunday afternoon, using two toothbrushes he had sharpened into knives.

After being subdued by two other deputies, Kendell Shorts, whose age and address were unavailable, was treated Sunday evening at Natchez Regional Medical Center for a cut on the head. No one else was injured in the incident.

Shorts was placed in a &uot;tight cell,&uot; or first-floor cell in view of the jail’s office, on Sunday after causing a disturbance from his second-floor cell Saturday.

While Sheriff Ronny Brown would not give the first names of the officers involved, he said Sunday’s incident started when an Officer Jones went to Shorts’ &uot;tight cell&uot; to retrieve his dinner tray.

Brown said Officer Champlin called for backup at 5:31 p.m. after he saw that Shorts was holding Jones with two homemade knives, or &uot;shanks,&uot; to her neck.

Champlin attempted to reason with Shorts, but to no avail, Brown said, adding that Shorts had said &uot;he was going to get out of there, and he didn’t care who he had to kill to do it.&uot;

Two guards entering from opposite sides of the cell entrance subdued Shorts at about 5:45 p.m.

Brown said that as of Sunday night, he and other Sheriff’s Office officials were working to determine how Shorts was able to make the shanks and what changes could be made to tighten security.

&uot;We’re reviewing that now,&uot; Brown said.

After discussing the incident with District Attorney Ronnie Harper Sunday night, Brown said Shorts will face charges of assault on an officer (two counts) and attempted escape (one count).

Shorts already faced a charge of armed robbery in connection with the January robbery of a Shell gas station in Washington.
