JONESVILLE, La. &045; Block played some of its best baseball of the year and got a decisive win in the opening round of the LHSAA playoffs Thursday night.
The Bears (10-13) beat Logansport 13-4, taking advantage of an eight-run fourth inning to pull away and take the victory. Block will face the winner of Ascension Catholic and Hanesville Tuesday in the second round.
&uot;The kids really came around and are playing great baseball,&uot; Block head coach Jeremy Farrington said.
Block and Logansport were tied 3-3 heading into the fourth when the Bears offense came alive. Bryan Collins got on with a double and went to third on an error.
Adam Coldiron sacrificed him and then the Sharp boys went to work.
Chase Sharp doubled and came home when brother A.J. Sharp homered.
After that, things got ugly. The Bears had two singles, a hit batsman and a walk.
Jordan Wilson drove in two runs and the rout was on. Block added two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
&uot;We’re hitting the ball. We finally started hitting, had a couple walks and took advantage of some situational hitting,&uot; Farrington said.
Block pitcher Cody Johnson threw a complete game for the Bears, striking out eight batters and giving up just three hits.
&uot;Cody’s my senior pitcher. That puts him at a total of 148 strikeouts on the year,&uot; Farrington said. &uot;He does a great job.&uot;
Johnson also got some help from his defense, particularly the outfield. On a night where the wind was blowing strong, the Bears outfielders made some nice plays.

MONTEREY, La. &045; Here it goes again with Gary Evans and opposing teams who haven’t seen him.
Man, does he pitch awkward. But after a game like this, the submarine hurler is the one making people look awkward as he struck out six, allowed two hits and walked only three in the first-round playoff win.
The Wolves will face the winner of the Oak Hill-Castor game Tuesday.
&uot;He pitched a good game &045; a real good game,&uot; Monterey head coach Hank Zizzi said. &uot;Just that weird delivery, and he only walked three. So that helped. But we played real good defense, and Gary pitched a good ball game. Every now and then he’ll come over the top. He’s got a nice little split finger when he comes over the top. It’s a big difference.&uot;
Evans kept control on the mound, including the fourth and fifth innings when he got into little jams and worked himself out. In the fourth he yielded a walk and a wild pitch to give Downsville a runner in scoring position in a scoreless game, but Evans got out.
In the fifth the Demons got a walk, a groundout and a single to put runners on the corners with one out and the Wolves holding a 1-0 lead, but Evans got the next batter to groundout back to the mound and two batters later got a flyout to end the inning.
The Wolves broke it open in the fifth with seven runs for the 8-0 lead thanks to a Billy Metcalf grand slam. Evans walked, Matt Shively singled and Landon White singled in Evans for the first run, and Jordon Tiffee walked to load the bases and set the table to the freshman Metcalf, who made it a 6-0 lead with a swing of the bat.
