Both Natchez High clubs dominate at Brook Relays

BROOKHAVEN &045; You could hardly ask for a better final meet before the first one that really counts.

Both Natchez High girls’ and boys’ track teams won the teams titles at the Brookhaven High Relays Friday. The Lady Bulldogs dominated their side by claiming 196 points with Brookhaven in second at 108, and the boys finished 10 points better than second-place Brookhaven in the standings.

The girls had won all but two events, while Taji Dorsey was named meet MVP.

Both teams head into their division meet Thursday at Vicksburg.

&uot;For the predistrict meet coming from the Mississippi State meet (last week), we did pretty well,&uot; NHS head coach Larry Wesley said. &uot;We’re trying to get ready for district coming next week. The girls did very well.&uot;

Dorsey won the 400 in 1:01.89, the long jump at 16-9 and the triple jump at 32-8. Candace Frye won the 100 at 12.87 seconds, the 100 hurdles at 15.47 seconds and the 300 hurdles at 47.50.

Ke’Airra Jones won the 200 in 26.21 seconds and the high jump at 5-0. Whitney Thomas won the 800 at 2:47, LaColony Oliver won the 1,600 in 6:28.28 and the 3,200 in 14:03 and Porsha Singleton won the shot put at 30-0.

In relays, the 400-relay team of Jessica Gill, Candace Bradley, Jones and Dorsey won it in 50.22 seconds. The mile relay team of Thomas, Wennifer Noble, Alice Franklin and Oliver won it in 4:44.

The 800 relay team of Bradley, Charmaine King, Jones and Noble won it in 1:45.

Other results were Singleton in second in the 800 in 2:54, Pam Selmon in second in the 1,600 in 6:29.37 and the 3,200 in 14:10, Franklin in third in the high at 4-6, Frye fourth in the long at 14-6 and Thomas third in the triple at 30-0.

In discus, Thomas was second in 68-0 and Noble third at 55-0.

In boys, Travis Washington just missed on the boys’ MVP award after he won two events and finished second in another.

He ran the 100 in 10.73 seconds to win that and the 400 in 51.33 seconds to win it before coming in second in the 200 at 22.89 seconds.

Rodney Gray won the 300 hurdles in 40.44 seconds. The mile relay team of Montreal Shelton, Jarred Logan, Derek McGee and Jeremy Hargrave won in 3:43.19.

Other results were Travis Graves in seconds in the 800 in 2:12.63 and John Isaac third in 2:18.14, Graves in second in the 1,600 in 5:06.17 and Montrell Gooden in fourth in 5:30.49, Gooden in second in the 3,200 in 11:36 and Shelton third in 11:46 and Jordan Smith in third in the 110 hurdles in 16.70 seconds.

The 400 relay team of Gray, Brandon Lewis, Jeremy Buckles and McGee came in second in 44.56 seconds. The 800 relay team of Washington, McGee, Jeremy Houston and Gray came in second in 1:31.49.

Gray was second in high jump at 6-2 with Jordan Smith fifth at 5-10, Brandon Lewis was seventh in long jump at 18-4 with Hargrave jumping the same, Gray was fourth in the triple jump at 39-10 with Hargrave fifth at 39-7, Houston was seventh in the shot put at 34-6 with Hargrave fifth at 39-7 and Wilson was eighth in discus at 94-5 with Houston behind at 91-1.
