Brookhaven gets by CA; Trinity Saints slam BG

BROOKHAVEN &045; The host Brookhaven Academy Cougars came back from a 7-6 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to post a 10-7 Division 4-AA win over the Centreville Academy Tigers Friday night.

The teams remain tied for second place in the division race.

Tuesday night, BA (11-7, 6-4) hosts Bowling Green and Centreville meets Columbia in a pair of game that will decide which two teams go to state.

&uot;Centreville is a very good baseball team,&uot; BA head baseball coach Steve Cooksey said. &uot;Centreville executes very well.&uot;

Centreville led 7-6 going into the bottom of the fifth when Seth Davis doubled off the left field wall and Chris Falvey singled. Jake Peairs took over for starter Josh Lambert with two runners on base and no outs.

Cole Hodges singled, Corey Dickerson bunted to first and scored pinch runner Cameron Achord (for Davis) to tie the game at seven.

Keith Franklin singled to first then stole second base and was out at third following a wild infield throw to first that landed in the outfield and allowed three more runs to score.

BA led 10-7 and held on the for the win.

BA led 1-0 in the first inning and went up 2-1 in the second. Centreville recorded three runs in the top of the third for a 4-2 lead. The Cougars came back one run to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Cougars outscored the Tigers 3-1 in the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead. The Tigers responded with two runs in the top of the fifth for a 7-6 advantage before the Cougars exploded the four big runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Dickerson (4-1) was the winning pitcher, going the distance with seven runs allowed on 11 hits, 6 strikeouts, 4 walks and a hit batter. The losing hurler was Peairs with four runs allowed on four

hits, one strikeout and one walk.

Corey Dickerson and Paul Davis powered the Cougars with a home run and a single apiece. Jeremy Winborne singled three times. Falvey and Franklin both doubled and singled.

Pacing the Tigers with a double and three singles was Lambert. Jeffrey Delee singled twice. Brad Blades doubled and singled. Peairs and Blake Devall doubled.

Tensas 4, Briarfield 3

LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. &045; After allowing two runs in the second inning, Zach Jones settled down after that and was the winning run in the top of the fifth inning as the Chiefs held on to defeat the Rebels in an MPSA District 7-A game.

With the game tied at 3-3 after four innings, Jones walked, stole second and scored on a single by Dustin Fuller. After that, Jones, who pitched a two-hitter, shut out the Rebels in the final three innings.

Tensas (4-6, 6-9) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on Thomas Crigler scored on an RBI single by Jim Lentz, who later scored on a fielder’s choice by Ryan Borsch. Briarfield then tied the score with its two runs off Jones in the second.

The Chiefs then scored one run in the top of the fourth as Randall Borsch singled in his brother Ryan Borsch. But the Rebels answered with a run of their on in the bottom of the fourth.

Trinity 10, Bowling Green 0

NATCHEZ &045; The Saints no longer have to worry about going winless in MPSA District 4-AA this season as they not only defeated the Buccaneers, but did so by 10-run ruling them in five innings.

Trinity Episcopal (1-10, 5-17) took advantaged of a solid pitching performance by Kolby Godfrey, good hitting and three Bowling Green errors to end this game in less than two hours. Bowling Green’s pitchers also hurt themselves by hitting eight batters and walking five.

Godfrey had his way with the Buccaneer’s batters as he allowed just one hit and struck out seven. Kyle Ketchings had half of Trinity’s six hits as the Saints essentially put the game away by scoring nine runs in the first three innings.
