JONESVILLE, La. &045; Christy Corley had one of her best performances on the mound this season and was aided by three insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning as the Vidalia Lady Vikings defeated the Block Lady Bears 4-0 Tuesday afternoon.
Corley was close to having both a perfect game and a no-hitter. She ended going two batters over the minimum.
A walk ended any chances of a perfect game. She had a no-hitter going into the seventh when Block’s Sonni Manning stopped that with a single.
&uot;I don’t know if you can call it a single. It went under the second baseman’s glove,&uot; Lady Vikings head coach Gary Paul Parnham said. &uot;If he (Block head coach Kerry Kirby) wants to call it a single, I can live with that. She had a good performance. It’s the kind of performance she needs to have before playoff time.&uot;
The fans were treated to a pitcher’s duel between Corley and the Lady Bears’ Glenda Butts. Corley fanned seven while Butts struck out four and walked none.
However, the defense behind Butts let her down in the two innings in which the Lady Vikings scored. Vidalia’s defense did not commit any errors.
&uot;We’ve been playing solid defense lately,&uot; Parnham said.
Vidalia (17-11-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Chelsey Knapp singled to right field and later scored on a fielding error.
Then things fell apart for Block (6-14-2) in the fourth.
Mary Katherine Golden led off the inning with a double to right field and scored on a single by Rachel Roberts, who later scored on an RBI groundout by Knapp. Chelsie McElewee then got on first on an error and scored on a groundout by Bridget Waller.
&uot;We had two hits going into the third inning and three hits going into the fourth,&uot; Parnham said. &uot;We’ve played them three times and that was probably her (Butts) best performance on the mound. We got to her in the fourth. I feel pretty well about how we’ve played, putting the ball in play.&uot;
