Roundup: Hounds put away Central

FERRIDAY, La. &045; The entire playoff series came down to this, and the ball went to Jacob Bonnette on the mound.

The senior Huntington Hound put up another solid start but may have did one better &045; a complete game shutout over a good Central Academy team for a 5-0 win to claim the series and advance to the second round against the Riverdale-Amite School Center winner.

Bonnette went the distance and walked only one while scattering nine hits and never really getting into a big jam.

&uot;Jacob Bonnette threw the game of his life tonight,&uot; Huntington head coach Mitch Ashmore said. &uot;He stepped up really, really big for us. I’m really proud of him. He was in total control the whole game. He was just in command of his pitches. He’s throwing better, and that’s a real positive for us going into the next round.&uot;

The Vikings came up with nine hits and could have put pressure on the right-hander, but each time Bonnette came up with the key pitch or the Hounds’ defense backed him up. The Hounds had just one error in the contest, and some key hits early in the game that scored runs gave him room to work.

&uot;They had a couple runners on here and there,&uot; Ashmore said. &uot;We were always able to make plays, and he always made the big pitch. That’s what was so astounding about him tonight. He deserves the credit for being able to step in there and throw and help us going another week. He really sucked it up tonight.&uot;

The Hounds (18-6) got two runs in the second and third innings off Central starter Ross Brown to take the quick lead. The first two runs came off a squeeze bunt with the bases loaded as Mike Ferguson put one down to score the first one, and a wild throw to first scored the next one.

The Hounds then picked up two in the third as Trey Keith singled in Chad Thomas and Trey Corbett for the 4-0 lead.

&uot;I’ll say something else &045; that was a scrappy ball club, a lot like us,&uot; Ashmore said. &uot;They pitched three different people at us. They swung the bats pretty well. It thought most of the time they hit the ball harder than we did, but we did some thing to score runs like we always have. But things went more our way defensively.&uot;

Glenbrook 21, WCCA 9

WOODVILLE &045; Just when the Rams got back into the game felt good about their chances, it happened again.

Glenbrook run up another nine-run inning in the sixth &045; the Apaches scored nine in the first &045; to break the game wide open and take the win in Game 2 of the playoff series with WCCA for the sweep.

The Rams finished their season 13-5.

&uot;They hit the ball,&uot; WCCA head coach Ray Olive said. &uot;We just couldn’t seem to get them out. They hit the ball well, and they hit it where we weren’t. Every time they had a man or two on base they’d hit it in the gap.&uot;

The Apaches broke away from a 12-9 score after five to chase WCCA ace Collin Dor, whose pitch count was at 80 after he went the distance Tuesday in Game 1. Spike Deville came in with the bases loaded after Glenbrook had scored one run, but the Apaches started hitting the ball again.

They got four hits there, and Boggs came up with a double to drive in three runs to fuel the rally. Tindol later singled in two runs.

The Rams scored in every inning and picked up two in the fourth and fifth to climb back.

In the fifth David Ryan led off with a walk and later scored on a Deville single, and Ruston Cado singled in Deville for the second run.

&uot;We were feeling pretty good then,&uot; Olive said. &uot;We hit the ball pretty hard, several of them right to them. We felt we were in the game. We just survived that first inning. That killed us. We felt like the game was going to go our way, but the sixth inning was a killer.&uot;

Block 7, Delhi 4

DELHI, La. &045; The Bears rallied for five runs in the sixth to claim the three-run win and the Division 4-1A championship over Delhi.

Cody Johnson got the win on the mound for Block. Evan White had a triple, and Ethan Trisler came up with a double.

Block (2-1, 9-13) will open the playoffs next week at home.

Vidalia 11, Mangham 5

VIDALIA, La. &045; The Vikings got the non-district win over the Dragons to finish the season with a 22-5 mark.
